Five years of no flying
✈️ ❌ ➑️ πŸš… βœ…

5 years ago, I realised that my #academic travels were emitting way too much #greenhouse #gas #GHG (up to 20 t #CO2 / yr) and hence that my #professional activity was not #sustainable. I thus decided to completely ban air #travel (#plane) and travel mainly by #train within #Europe.

5 years later (i.e. now), my professional travels' #carbonfootprint dropped by **a factor 50**, without impacting my #publication records (compared to 2017 - 2019).

I wrote a post for the #blog of @a4e about my experience. Check it out: astronomersforplanet.earth/fiv

@AlexSanterne @a4e @labos1point5 @LAM_Marseille @CNRS_INSU @academicchatter @astrophysics @StayGrounded_net I would love to take the train within Europe but it is so bad.
Like this trip to Vienna, yes you can take the train, but I opted out because of the bad reputation of DB.
As a female I can not risk to get stranded alone at a dark station…..

If only people like Trump had studied astronomy they would understand how runaway greenhouses have affected other planets and the serious risk we are running of creating a runaway greenhouse catastrophe on Earth.

The pair of #galaxies M81 and M82 are among my favorite objects to observe in a telescope. One (M81 - or Bodes #galaxy) is seen face-on while the other (M82 - or the cigar) is seen edge-on. They are visible in the Ursa Majoris constellation. This #APOD #picture is a wide-angle view of both galaxies with their neighbour galaxies.

Today's #APOD is a #picture of the #nebula called #Thor's helmet. No, this #image is NOT produced by the #MARVEL studios, but really is an #astronomy object.

Someone should ask Chris #Hemsworth if NGC2359 (the catalog name of this object) is his favorite nebula πŸ˜€

@MartialRelier @AlexSanterne Wow, this is beautiful! I hope this is not a silly or dumb question, but when people share pics of nebulas like this, is that what it really looks like to the naked eye (as in, if I flew a magic spaceship to these places, would I see these beautiful colors all around me)? Or are the colors a representation of otherwise-invisible light/elements? Sincerely asking, because I don’t know. Thank you for sharing. 😊

"I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near Thor's Helmet. All those moments will be lost in time like tears in rain." πŸ€”
