Today's #APOD is a #picture of the #nebula called #Thor's helmet. No, this #image is NOT produced by the #MARVEL studios, but really is an #astronomy object.

Someone should ask Chris #Hemsworth if NGC2359 (the catalog name of this object) is his favorite nebula πŸ˜€

@MartialRelier @AlexSanterne Wow, this is beautiful! I hope this is not a silly or dumb question, but when people share pics of nebulas like this, is that what it really looks like to the naked eye (as in, if I flew a magic spaceship to these places, would I see these beautiful colors all around me)? Or are the colors a representation of otherwise-invisible light/elements? Sincerely asking, because I don’t know. Thank you for sharing. 😊

@tiamat271 that’s a question many people are wondering. I will let @MartialRelier (who did a pretty similar photo for #YourBestAstroPic2022) complete if needed. Unfortunately no, if you observe that #nebula with a relatively large #telescope, you wouldn’t see colors at all. The #eye are working at high-cadence so there’s no time to collect enough photons each frame. You might distinguish vaguely the shape of the nebula if your telescope is large enough.

@tiamat271 @MartialRelier Now you travel there with a rocket, you would see different colors. This image was taken with narrow band filters, like for many #nebula, but the eye’s spectral response is quite different. You would see the same structure, but the colors would be different.

"I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near Thor's Helmet. All those moments will be lost in time like tears in rain." πŸ€”
