A mindblowing set of images of what the flood in #Valencia looks like from space - images of the same region from 8 and 30 October (I've been to the area, this is scary):

@vicgrinberg I was chatting with a good friend who lives in Catalonia about this earlier today, and he mentioned that the river there was diverted south some years back, and then the former course / floodplain extensively developed (roads, houses etc.). He said even at that time there were people saying it was a mistake, and that while this recent rainfall in the mountains was unprecedented, it was probably just a matter of time before something like this was going to happen.

Of all the things to over-engineer and over-build, seawalls should be first in the list.

Greeted a friendly neighbour after a stressful work day 😽

@vicgrinberg Ooo a white and orange cat, I don’t see that often. She looks happy!

Being an adult means realizing that while you love cat-sitting, having an actual cat will not work for you, because OMG, a week and there is so much cat hair! Everywhere!

Met a friend I haven't seen for a while on the way home. I think the encounter made both of us happy!

You are never unobserved when running through the city... 😼

People post because they want to vent, to share their frustration, to make others laugh or shake heads. If ppl post to get advice, they usually ask.

So: You want to give advice?

Has the person explicitly asked for it? No? Then don't.

But you really, really want to give advice! Still: no!

But your advice is really relevant! Still: no.

But you also know the person well (you follow them & they you & you interacted): ask if they want advice. If they don't explicitly say yes - it's still a no.

A reminder, also to myself: if someone does not feel right, block. Block early. Block before you spend emotional energy.

It's not a public forum (except if you want it to be). It's your space. Your little corner. (Your salon if you run it like I do mine.)

I agree 100%.

On the Hellsite, it was the hellsite, so I didn't see the point of blocking people unless they became aggressive towards me.

On Mastodon, I have adopted the strategy of blocking when my sensors first detect gaslighting, unprovoked attacks, or anyone who defends antidemocratic, racist, homophobic, transphobic views.

Also, weirdos that ask personal or awkward questions will get blocked immediately.

And also followers with handles like "mr3247895k45@"

I just don't have the time or inclination for that shit anymore.

We are all stardust.

That oxygen you breath? That comes from dying massive stars, ending their light in a supernova.

The iron in your blood? Some massive stars dying, but mainly white dwarfs, the leftovers of dwarf stars like our own Sun, exploding.

The gold ring on your finger? Mostly merging neutron stars, leftovers from supernovae.

@vicgrinberg If you don't mind, a Q from a layman who loves science but lacks the math.

Stars are incredibly far away, especially when not traveling at the speed of light. How does all that matter get *here*? Is the age of the universe ancient enough compared to the slow movement of matter moving through space enough to explain it? Did that matter get distributed when the universe was a lot "smaller" than it is today, and clumps of matter were closer together? 1/2
