A while ago I wrote up "What is a blockchain, really?" because I was seeing people talking past each other because they had different definitions: dustycloud.org/blog/what-is-a-

Many expansions in there, but my favorite is still "Blockchain is to Bitcoin what Roguelike is to Rogue"

do you have opinions about

*whispers*: negative zero

Eugen Rochko

@cwebber If minus means below zero than negative zero is meaningless

I'm happy that I'll be part of two meetings this month in front of the EU Commission talking about decentralized social networks and the work we've done socialhub.activitypub.rocks/t/

I believe this conversation is an important one to have, and I'd like to expand on why below.

Is there a non-electron application to connect to Signal which is FOSS?

Darius Kazemi

@cwebber No. Basically, you could set up your own Signal-style network using their protocol and hosting your own servers, but you would not be able to get your third-party application permission to connect to Signal's servers.

thank you dishwasher, thank you electric pressure cooker, thank you food processor...

A thing that's so much massively superior today than when I was a kid: light bulbs! Especially not needing to change them all the time!

Eugen Rochko

@cwebber Unless you pick them very carefully you’re getting a worse quality of light though

#apconf2020's live parts are now open to non-registrants... in ~15 minutes I'll be doing my Q&A on "Spritely & Federation Futures" and there's plenty of other great talks lined up too! conf.activitypub.rocks/#live

See you at the Q&A!

@darius gave the perfect closing keynote to #apconf2020 in "Let's Play and Win Our Own Game" by helping us think from the perspective of: what are the centralized systems failing at, and what can we do that they can't? Lots to think about here! conf.tube/videos/watch/b8d6c88

We're excited to announce the ActivityPub conf 2020 keynotes!

Opening up the conference we have a panel featuring the editors/authors of the ActivityPub panel: Jessica Tallon (@tsyesika), Amy Guy (@rhiaro), Erin Shepherd, and Evan Prodromou, with me moderating! (Hear from everyone else this time!)

Wrapping things up is Darius Kazemi (@darius) presenting "Let's Play and Win Our Own Game"!

The process of using the "Always on Top" feature in a (floating) window manager

- Right click window header, "Always on Top"
- *juvenile chuckle* heh, always on top
- Cool this is doing what I want thanks window manager feature everyone has forgotten about
- *10 minutes pass*
- wtf WHY DOES THIS WINDOW KEEP GETTING IN THE WAY OF THIS OTHER WINDOW I'M TRYING TO USE
- oh right

Darius Kazemi

@cwebber exactly my experience with this feature

Can we build a system where users are not beholden to the profit line of a single company to decide whether their communities continue?

Darius Kazemi

@cwebber My first job out of college was at Turbine and it still makes me so sad to see the Asheron's Call closure screenshots :(

It was such an incredible community
