Friendly reminder that if you download software updates for Fedora or AlmaLinux from London, there's good odds that your software updates are coming from an HP thin client sitting in a road box in Surrey.

This is perfectly fine, and how free software / the Internet actually works.

@kwf I love this so much. It's just chillin' out there, having a good time.

@kwf that's amazing Kenneth - keep up the good work! Is this uhh.... Guerilla mirroring?

@kwf it makes sense, but I wasn't expecting it to be THAT localized. That's funky

Adding a 2.5" hard drive to an HP T620 thin client using the unpopulated mSATA connector and tapping 5V off one of the internal USB ports was just... *chef kiss* my brand of nonsense.

HP T620 thin client with the case cover off. SATA cable soldered onto the motherboard and siliconed down, with a 2.5" laptop hard drive mounted to a custom sheet metal bracket painted bubblegum pink.
Microscope image of the SATA cable soldered onto the unpopulated mSATA connector footprint.

@kwf I mean that's one way to do it.

Personally I would've picked a similar approach or just bought a M.2 B+M-Key SSD.

Which I did in the past - twice.

Because I got a 3-pack for under €60 with shipping and I use two as low-power mini servers.

@kwf but why?

Not to be dismissive, I really want to understand why

#JohnMastodon really isn't getting the level of appreciation that he deserves, if we're all being honest with ourselves.

XKCD load bearing comic with the random project replaced with John Mastodon's name.

It's here! And it's just as magnificent and adorable as I dreamed! 😍

A two port SATA controller in an mPCIe form factor! 🤓 #xp

@kwf I just thought of throughing one of these into the Turris Omnia Router for RAID.
But there's the same problem with the case, esp. getting the cables out without damaging anything.

@kwf OPSEC on the fingerprints in the photos though. You should change those prints when you get a chance.
