The most wonderful smart people I've found are those that presuppose everyone else is just as smart, if not smarter, than them and we've all just had access to different information.

@nikki this is a key point for education too. I had so many people tell me I’m not good at math that I believed it, only to find out that I was just forced to do it in a way that didn’t work for my brain. There is not inherent physical quality to being smart, it’s all in how you are taught to use your brain.

Saying not to bother with the favourite button on mastodon because it doesn't affect any algorithm is like saying not to say thank you to someone because no one else will hear. Stop thinking in those old social media ways of engagement and visibility and algorithms and reach and audience and start thinking about being social. And BOOST! It's how you saw this, probably! A favourite is a nice thanks, a boost lets everyone else discover the great thing you discovered too!

@nikki I hit the button a lot, but because I have been trained to click anything I enjoy by social media programs. Unfortunately, studies show that's how they hijack our reward center of the brain and actually incentivizes us to post things that will get the most engagement which is often the ones that are most emotionally charged. That's how social media reinforces hateful or angry posts or ones designed to create fear. I'm trying to train my brain differently on this one if I can.
