The most wonderful smart people I've found are those that presuppose everyone else is just as smart, if not smarter, than them and we've all just had access to different information.

@nikki@topspicy.social Not gonna lie, I don't know how anyone has the brain power to rank themselves against anyone else.

Ricki Tarr

@nikki I never want to hang with someone who thinks they're the smartest person in the room

The Witch of Crow Briar

@RickiTarr @nikki And even if I found myself in that incredibly unlikely scenario, it would just be so tedious, who wants that??

Fish Id Wardrobe

@RickiTarr @nikki I sometimes find I am the smartest person in the room. I hate that, in part because I'm just not that smart.

PeoriaBummer

@nikki @RickiTarr A wise way to behave in so many ways.

a) You won’t underestimate people, which is useful when dealing with most people, but particularly those with bad intentions.
b) You will open yourself to learn from people who have different perspectives than your own.
c) You will cultivate intellectual humility in yourself, which will keep you from making bad choices.
d) You will adopt a perspective that has the added benefit of probably being true most of the time.

@nikki And then there’s people like me, who have learned the hard way that almost everyone really *is* smarter than them.

At least in specific areas.

Nikki 🦔

@slothrop I think we're all smart in some areas and utter doofuses in others.

I can write code and draw stuff and write music but I can't keep track of where I put ANYTHING

Paul Cantrell

@nikki @slothrop
I can remember structural details of code I wrote 20 years ago but will forget your name within 30 seconds after the 6th repetition, so…yeah

@inthehands @nikki @slothrop
Damn right (except 50 years and two seconds in my case) 😔😁

Paul Cantrell

@AlisonW @jemjabella @nikki @slothrop
Yes, this is approximately how I address people most of the time in normal conversation, since I can’t remember their names.

I used to be in computer pre-sales eons ago. I'd be introduced to the CEO of some multinational and immediately forget his name. Always fun moments 😉

@AlisonW @inthehands @nikki @slothrop I mostly just call people dude and hope for the best

@nikki so over a decade ago, I heard @hotdogsladies say something similar on a podcast and it really stuck with me.

danblondell

@nikki use your full vocabulary but use it in a way anyone can understand

PadreWil

@nikki Its called humility. Showing respect and caring about the one who you are exchanging information with.

Jeff

@nikki anyone on Twitter is not a journalist they are opportunist

Doug 🌈🇨🇦 :verified:

@nikki oh no. I forget and tell people 'That's easy! You just blah blah blah.'
'I can't do that!' they protest.
I've just told them how to pick up 3 new skill sets, which for me is nothing but for anyone else it's an impossible task.
I treat people as equals but don't assume they can do what I can do. And compliment them when they come up with a better idea.

@nikki It's a nice thought but, when you look at the science half of the population is below average-

Sam Grubb

@nikki this is a key point for education too. I had so many people tell me I’m not good at math that I believed it, only to find out that I was just forced to do it in a way that didn’t work for my brain. There is not inherent physical quality to being smart, it’s all in how you are taught to use your brain.

Suzanne Reinhardt, PhD she/her

@nikki @grubbslinger exactly. This is accurate. Some of us have been more privileged to be able to develop our intelligence.

@pineywoozle

@nikki Pop always said no matter how much you know there’s some little old lady down the road who knows something you don’t and she knows it damn well.
