some #SERVFAIL updates:

we (mostly @famfo) are finishing up the DNSSEC support. I’ll want to test it before it goes live in the beta, but we have a flow, and i’m really happy with how it looks so far ^^

-

the API proxy functionality got a bit more complete thanks to a contribution by @kytta. Really happy to see “outside” folks contributing :blobcat3c:

myself, I’ve been doing some less exciting stuff: I refactored a bunch of internals to make them faster, and added support for automatic password resets.

fun to dine and chat with a single DNS entry

By "Markov chain" I mean `random.choice` over trigrams from `nltk.tokenize.TweetTokenizer`, so very little science behind this :D

Any apps like @halideapp Process Zero or ZeroCam on Android? Or do I have to make one?

(Yes I Googled this)

Григорий Клюшников

But actually, all third-party apps on Android take unprocessed pictures by default because most of the time all the smart processing is part of the OEM camera app. It only changed relatively recently when an API was introduced for apps to opt into image processing. It may vary by the manufacturer but that's definitely the case at least on Pixel phones.

I have no clue how badly macOS Time Machine must be implemented. Same laptop, same target hard drive. Time Machine used to take HOURS for once-per-month incremental backups (no more than 30 gigs). @restic took 30 minutes for the initial backup of over 100 gigs, + compression, + encryption.

I love this software, it's so incredible

“I’ve always wanted to try #VoidLinux, let’s see how it goes!”

A few hours later:

Void is definitely underrated though, it’s so much fun! :void:

да, я думаю о том, что надо попробовать NixOS, потому что эти ебантяи достали удалять пакеты с серверов

Open-source is the best thing our society has to offer. Want to debug a feature, but there are not enough logs? Clone, patch, recompile, done.

And don't get me started on languages like Go and Zig which make cross-compilation the matter of two environment variables

I have an idea for a command-line tool, which is supposed to be run very often. As such, I want to name (or at least alias) it to a single letter. I want to pick a (starting) letter that does not conflict with existing aliases, though.

Which aliases are *not taken* on your system?

1. Go to your terminal
2. For each poll option, run `which`
3. Select the poll options for which the output is `not found`

Here's an example run. My reply to the poll would thus be "j", "o", and "x"

@kytta Sounds like some hybris is going on? Is it the next 'we pipe your text to chatgpt' app? Or does it upload stuff to youtube? SCNR But, seriously, are you sure that you really need such a short command name? Even ls is two letters. What other one-letter commands exist? Maybe users can just create their own alias if needed?

@kytta We already have jj: github.com/martinvonz/jj

And I sometimes alias j for 'just`: github.com/casey/just

So preferably not j :)

I was thinking exactly the same thing yesterday when tried to manage my collection of wooden skis. Damn it, I own now 7 pairs of skis.

#Mastodon experts: Can one move multiple accounts to a single one? I was thinking of moving an older account to this one, but this one is already a moved account. It should be as simple as creating a second alias here and initiating a move there, shouldn’t it? Or is there something more to the process?

If you're an EU citizen and you hate DRM and planned obsolescence, here's an easy petition for you to sign:

stopkillinggames.com/eci

TL;DR: If online-only DRM servers shut down, publishers would be required to keep your game working regardless.

Only targets video games because that is where this practice is by far the most prevalent today, but it would set a precedent that we might soon need for things like phones, cars, and all the other things that are increasingly getting CPUs shoved inside them.

1 year to reach 1 million signatures.

@siguza but what if the company falls into bankruptcy?

@siguza I really want to sign this petition, but for some stupid reason I am not an EU citizen. (Yes, I'm British. *sigh*)

Telegram worries

Telegram was always my favorite messenger, as it provided a fast and user-friendly experience on multiple devices. But one and a half years ago, I already started doubting my decision to rely on Telegram.

Now I question it even more.

With the latest release, Telegram introduces an in-app browser, which is also enabled by default. With it they push “Web3” and “TON”-based websites. Recently they also already introduced more features with “TON” and “stars” integration. In my eyes, so much crypto bullshit.

And “Mini Apps”. Is Telegram becoming the new WeChat?

I really need to think about an alternative…

But messaging and other social apps don't work like that. You don't get to choose them the same way you choose your OS and other products you use personally. You'll have to convince everyone else to switch too. That's the only reason Facebook is still popular.

A better solution would be to build a Telegram client that doesn't implement the features you don't like.

TIL that, if you push an #OpenAPI YAML spec file to a #GitLab repository, you get the full, *interactive* #Swagger UI rendered in the web preview 🤯

Andy Piper

@kytta oh, thanks for sharing the knowledge, that’s a cool feature!
