It's Just Me

Just to clarify: when I boost a post, it doesnโ€™t necessarily mean I agree with it.
Often, I do it just to give visibility (and, consequently, to see the comments) on the topic being discussed - especially if itโ€™s a post from a BSD Cafe user.

@stefano@mastodon.bsd.cafe yeah I see a lot of bigger accounts have to put "boosts are not endorsements" as a disclaimer

If there's one thing life has taught me, it's that you should never make plans for Monday. Unexpected things are always around the corner... ๐Ÿ˜†

Your parents probably taught you from a young age not to take gifts from strangers, right?
So, why do you blindly accept now "free" services from companies online?

So many discussions at #EuroBSDCon2024 we had to make a second episode. Kick back, relax and enjoy the discussions with @cperciva @AFresh1 @notthebee and Liam Proven from #theregister . This week on #BSDNow https://www.bsdnow.tv/580 presented by #Tarsnap the backups for truely paranoid people (and me) https://tarsnap.com #FreeBSD #OpenBSD #NetBSD #DragonflyBSD #BSD

The most ironic thing that happened today: searching for installation instructions for a software. I found various blog posts claiming to contain the instructions, only to open them and see they all say the same thing: "docker compose..."

Whatโ€™s the point of an article like that? I mean: do we need an article suggesting such a simple operation?

Were the articles generated by an LLM by any chance? (I'm only half joking when I ask this...)
Justin

@stefano With my fellow #SysAdmin hat on, I hate Docker for software installs with a passion. I love it for building software, but that's it. That's where it belongs, in CI/CD.

It's Just Me

In the past few weeks, I've been reflecting on the current infrastructure behind the BSD Cafe. I'm satisfied with it, and it's stable (all services are accessible via IPv6, etc.), but in the original vision of my project, there were some different choices that I haven't implemented yet to maintain consistency with the available hardware.

Therefore, there will be some underlying changes (some already in testing), which I will obviously share both here and on the related wiki page (currently a bit outdated compared to the current setup).
You won't see anything "at a glance" (the best technical changes are those that aren't immediately visible), but I believe they will be appreciated.

Stay tuned!

This is how married life is.....
Today is our 27th wedding anniversary and guess what ?
Yep Julie forgot ๐Ÿคฃ. It's progress though as we both usually forget. We've been together for 33 years so life's taken it's toll and that's the excuse we use as to why we forget. ๐Ÿ˜‚

@justine Congrats! You know youโ€™ve got a good relationship when those things arenโ€™t an issue.

I'm glad to announce the release of version 2.60 of #snac, the simple, minimalistic #ActivityPub instance server written in C. It includes the following changes:

Migration from a snac account to a Mastodon one has been implemented. Please see snac(8) (the administrator manual) for more information.

Fixed a bug in argument parsing regarding some special characters (contributed by ndagestad).

Fixed image emojis in the public profile bio.

An odd evening: I realised just how clueless kids are when it comes to how to actually use a computer. Microsoft is infantilising our kids by turning everything into a browser app (#DigitalNatives my foot). Meanwhile I, their mother used a 45 year old scripting language to more or less painlessly sort + backup ~55,000 family photos by year + month... #BASH

@Ruth_Mottram I'm like right on the edge and it's horrifying, many of my classmates (college students) don't even know how to use email

C. Anthony Lewis

@Ruth_Mottram I concur... before I stepped away from permanent employment I ran a Stage 1 IT module. Over the 25+ years I can't say I noticed any significant change in student abilities. Even in the 'standard' packages that everyone 'knows' how to use...

There was a time when schools IT was Nicrosoft and Spreadsheets. I remember parents in IT coming in talking about coding.

I just deleted my Twitter account.

I saw a viral pro-H*tler tweet on my timeline with 66,000 likes and 9.5 million views. That was enough for me to ensure my posts donโ€™t contribute any value to that garbage dump.

@carnage4life @mastodonmigration I wish I could be surprised by something like that anymore. ๐Ÿ˜ฎโ€๐Ÿ’จ I know the Fediverse isnโ€™t exactly immune to hate groups, but at least we have ways to do something about it before it grows and festers and poisons everything around it.

In my opinion, every government, public entity, association, foundation, etc., that needs to communicate with the public should have its own communication channel, with full control over its data and the messages it delivers. When I read โ€œmy Discord server,โ€ I feel like responding โ€œthereโ€™s nothing โ€˜yoursโ€™ about it - tomorrow morning they could shut everything down, and you would have lost EVERYTHING.โ€. Own your data!

Sometimes, I read that instances are not opened because of โ€œcosts not balanced by the number of users.โ€ But even public television channels are often economically unprofitable, yet they are considered an essential service for public communication. Open, decentralized technologies that ensure control over oneโ€™s data should be treated the same way.

@stefano back when I worked at a university, we had a backup server running an ancient customized version of Linux. Was not on the internet so we didnโ€™t reboot it in over 5 years and we only did so to replace a hard drive.

Francesco P Lovergine

@stefano
I would extend the same concept to programming languages, but apparently, this is not a popular point of view. So, we now have a group of prime-time hypertrophic languages and frameworks with tons of new features (often not back-compatible) introduced at every release to cover the whole universe of applications and beyond (at least in the minds of the their teams).

@stefano Great article. Unfortunately it is very hard to convince people to move from Linux to BSD. I often hear people saying that BSD is something they have heard about but they would never consider installing it. Simply because they donโ€™t know it, but they know Linux. And why would they use something else instead, when hardware support is better and they get a system running a desktop environment out of the box? And when there is Docker and everything they think they needโ€ฆ
