Generative AI not only consumes a lot of energy, it's also likely to produce a lot of electronic trash.

According to researchers, the total amount of global e-waste could grow by the alarming factor of 1.000 in only 5 years.

There are solutions to reducing e-waste – e.g. by prolonging, reusing, and recycling hardware. Their implementation needs global strategies, of course.

An article by DW's Fred Schwaller explains the issue in more detail:

@dw_innovation According to a GenAI pitch deck I saw a couple of months ago, the energy required by GenAI globally doubles every 100 days.

Exponential, on a short X axis interval.

@dw_innovation factor 1000 in 5 years you say? Sheeesh, that's a lot, isn't it?

We started this account less than 6 months ago. It's going pretty well – thanks to you: 4.2k followers, lots of interactions, questions, and comments. πŸŽ‰

A couple of weeks ago, the European Broadcasting Union (#EBU) asked us to write a guest article about our experience with #Mastodon / the #Fediverse, explain the basics, and point out the advantages. :mastodon:

Challenge accepted. πŸ‘

So here's the finished post by @lxplm, hot off the #blog press. ⌨️

@dw_innovation Great article! I hope it will reach the important media outlets + broadcasters. They could even follow those #journalists who are already here: docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d

I have only a one-woman private podcast but I can confirm all these experiences. Above all, the communication (which at first glance does a little more work than dropping links) ensures very loyal/interested followers. Quality instead of quantity. 😊

> "the community can be a little geeky and smug at times."

Sadly accurate... Well, it's unfortunate for the 2nd half at least. The geekiness could stand a little more dilution.

"In KK Park, on the Myanmar-Thai border, those who refuse to scam face torture, starvation and even murder."

As an R&D unit, we usually don't post regular political news stories, but we'll make another exception here for two reasons: Our Julia Bayer was part of the investigative team. And the story shows what a dedicated group of journalists is able to uncover with the right digital tools – and the right mindset, of course.

@dw_innovation I do not see that as being political in nature, it is simply informational: pretty good journalism. Some parties will try to make it political because they don't like it, or because they like it too much. When that happens it is not the fault of the journalist unless they were heavily biased away from truth. As long as you stick with the truth and evidence and conclusions based upon those, you are not being political.

The two satellite photos (see article) are not from the same place.
Missing river in the older photo.
Not one of the buildings and streets of the older photo is shown in the newer photo.

(1/3) Dear Mastodon community,

we need your expertise and support:

As you may have heard, we're working on several tools to counter #disinfo and facilitate #verification.

One of them is called *Spot*. It's basically an AI-driven natural language interface for geospatial searches in #OpenStreetMap (#OSM).

I.e. you ask the tool about...

Screenshot of the Spot prototype application showing streets and landmarks in the centre of Berlin (example just as described in the toot).

Every one of these "disinformation" projects is connected to some kind of governmental security agency -- don't cooperate. Why would anyone need to "have this image of a political rally you want to verify" if they weren't police surveilling protestors?

News Media Scan, launched by DW in coop with @ooni allows users to check which news websites in their country / region are blocked and which are accessible.

It "empowers the public to document and collect evidence of news #media #censorship to support a #free and #open #internet around the world."
