We started this account less than 6 months ago. It's going pretty well – thanks to you: 4.2k followers, lots of interactions, questions, and comments. πŸŽ‰

A couple of weeks ago, the European Broadcasting Union (#EBU) asked us to write a guest article about our experience with #Mastodon / the #Fediverse, explain the basics, and point out the advantages. :mastodon:

Challenge accepted. πŸ‘

So here's the finished post by @lxplm, hot off the #blog press. ⌨️

@CBCNews ... they've been on here for over year. But I do agree that Canada needs to fo the same thing.

@OhOkKay @dw_innovation @lxplm @CBCNews
Why does Mastodon block it? I assumed it was some sort of mirror, not actual CBC. I don't expect CBC to come here because they can't control the toots like they pay a fascist company to do on their website.

@NMBA @OhOkKay @dw_innovation @lxplm @CBCNews
the CBC News account on press.coop is automatically generated from CBC's existing public RSS feeds, which is great, but not the same an official presence here (and redundant for those of us who already follow CBC with an RSS reader)

Dave Sanderson πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦πŸ

@NMBA It’s not blocked/hidden for me. The last toot from them came in less than 20 minutes ago into my timeline.

Dave Sanderson πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦πŸ

@NMBA I realize, but you were showing a screenshot of the @CBCNews as being hidden by the mstdn.ca moderators. I was just saying my feed from the CBC News bot is not hidden or blocked.

GunChleoc

@Sanderde @NMBA Your sever mstdn.ca is limiting the while pres.coop site, but no reason given. So, I suspect it's either because the content is mostly bots, or because they don't like it that the authors of the posts that are being mirrored weren't asked for consent.

Dave Sanderson πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦πŸ

@gunchleoc But why for @NMBA and not for me? Wouldn’t it be for everyone on the server?

@chad, if you have the time, any explanation?

x - Chad :CApride:

@Sanderde @gunchleoc @NMBA we limited bird app mirrors as they were causing confusion, tons of reports saying someone was impersonating someone not on the fediverse.

You’re still able to follow the accounts but they don’t appear in the federated timeline and you just have to click through that prompt if you don’t follow them.

Dave Sanderson πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦πŸ

@chad Thanks for the explanation. It makes sense. I went in search of a CBC News feed to follow and that one worked for me.

@gunchleoc @NMBA

@drq we'll see who's server get more attention, DW or BBC :)

@tallship What do you think they get wrong? There are other (significantly lower) estimates of the number of users on Mastodon (or the Fediverse ???) than the one referenced in that article but other than that I thought it was all pretty reasonable.

I look forward to DW setting up their own instance.

interesting - and yeah, I hope we get more news and media here

@BjornW@mastodon.social

@nporadio1 is mentioned in an interesting article by @dw_innovation on calling for all public broadcasters to join Mastodon:

ebu.ch/news/2024/03/public-bro

It's published on the EBU website. EBU is: "The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) is the world’s leading alliance of public service media (PSM)"

@dw_innovation @lxplm Nice summary of where we’re at πŸ˜€

Leigh Silvester

@dw_innovation @lxplm good article.

As you are aware, having your own server protects your brand and protects you from the possibility of a server closing down (unlikely in the case of mastodon.social).

Glad your experience has been positive.

Do you know what the reach of your article is likely to be in the industry?

Alex Plaum

@leighms @dw_innovation Thanks for the positive feedback! Regarding your question: I can't give you an exact number (yet), but it seems like a lot of people at European public media orgs are reading this – and I'm getting a lot of messages. πŸ˜ƒ

Voltaire

@lxplm @leighms @dw_innovation great to hear! hopefully you guys are the start of some positive transformation :)

Rotfarm

@dw_innovation @lxplm I think a reluctance exists because people have forgotten how to actually be social in a non curated sense of self. To actually make friends with strangers online, or to actually take the time to be part of a community by engaging with people on a level that may be less parasocial.

kahakai

@rotfarm thank you πŸ’―

I wanted to hear that from someone again. This is the reason for me and all what fediverse is about that I'm advocating to people for.

Rotfarm

@kahakai I think there's a level in de-escalating yhe ways that social media takes space in our lives, both as a viewer, and a user. I don't think it's an easy flip at all. It's not flashy, the people aren't either. We are just being little weirdos by ourselves and with eachother lol.

db0

@dw_innovation Since you're posting mostly articles, do consider (cross-)posting to #lemmy as well, as it's way more set for these sort of posts. You can even post in to lemmy from mastodon by @-ing the community you want.

soaproot

@mapache @db0 @dw_innovation @FediTips As you can see this rabbit hole can get a bit deep but some search terms which might be a bit more promising are: #Threadiverse #Kbin #PieFed #sublinks . This part of the Fediverse is a bit less well developed than the microblogging part but there has been a lot of activity in recent months and I have every reason to expect further development (both technically and in terms of things like moderation tools and standards).

grant :blobcatgoogly:

@mapache @db0 @dw_innovation Lemmy works similar to guppe groups, if you are posting to them at least, by mentioning the group handle

Following a Lemmy community from Mastodon unfortunately will fill your feed with any comment posted to the group :/

I’d love to either find or make a project that cleans up following Lemmy communities on other fediverse platforms tho

Maho Pacheco 🦝🍻

@grant @db0 @dw_innovation I know! I subscribed to a memes thread, and altho the memes are nice, the comments were adding a lot of noise to my feed so I decided to unsubscribe.

Nice to read "Fediverse"... but you still writing about Mastodon only.

A quick search in your article for
- peertube
- friendica
- pleroma
- calckey
- funkwhale
- pixelfed

gives NO result.

Please go back and try to find out, what the REAL advantage of the fediverse is.

I can help you a little bit:

For example #Peertube
Your own a Mastodon-Account. I own a Friendica- and a Peertube account (both on my own servers).
You can read my comment, which comes from friendica. You get my like, if i like your postings.
So, what the hell is peertube...
It is a very advanced Video-platform, fully federating in the fediverse and has similar features as youtube has.
A useraccount can have more than one channel (YT: one account = one channel).
Peertube has live-videos, live-chat, small video-cutting-features, you can update your videos, and you can automatically sync your YT-Channel.
Peertube has also Podcasting-Features for audio-only content.

And the best is:
You can follow my peertube-channel also from mastodon. You get every new video from my peertube-channel in your mastodon timeline.
If you like my videos, you can give a "star" and i receive it as "like" in Peertube.
You can easily share my peertube-videos with your mastodon-user to your followers... and your followers receive my peertube-video...

So you don't need a peertube-account just to consume, like, comment and share the videos you want.

You need only a peertube-account, if you want to share your videos via fediverse.

And if your own a YT-Channel... just mirror and keept it in sync with Peertube, and you have to only upload your videos on YT, and a short time later your fediverse-followers receive notifications for a new video... and can watch, like, share or comment it directly from mastodon, friendica, pleroma, calckey, akkoma... all the other micro/macro-blogging services from the fediverse... you've forgotten to mention in your article...

Reminds me of a reddit-post where a smallish game developer noted that while their game sold a fraction on linux than it did on windows, 95% of bug reports came from linux and almost all were applicable to improving the windows-version. Better yet: the bug reports were detailed and easy to replicate.

So they upkept the linux-version not for the sales, but for the feedback that allowed the improvement on Windows -- which in turn led to sales.

@dw_innovation @lxplm Wonderful post. emerging social media platforms are a difficult beast but Mastodon really is one of the best, with the best community I've found since the days of the dial-up BBS. It's inspiring and hopeful, and platforms like DW are vital to its success, so thank you for the report.

David Bailey :verified:

@dw_innovation Well done. It’s great to see another national broadcaster enjoying success on the Fediverse, even if it is their innovation department rather than their mainstream channel. Small steps are still to be encouraged, but my message to them is β€œBe bold!”

@dw_innovation
Can't wait for your own instances in the #Fediverse ! Maybe #PeerTube , #pixelfed and #mobilizon are also a thing for you?

@dw_innovation Great article! I hope it will reach the important media outlets + broadcasters. They could even follow those #journalists who are already here: docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d

I have only a one-woman private podcast but I can confirm all these experiences. Above all, the communication (which at first glance does a little more work than dropping links) ensures very loyal/interested followers. Quality instead of quantity. 😊

> "the community can be a little geeky and smug at times."

Sadly accurate... Well, it's unfortunate for the 2nd half at least. The geekiness could stand a little more dilution.
