I hate to admit it, but modern Javascript (the language, not the ecosystem) is actually pretty tolerable. Most of the old warts are avoidable and arrow functions, destructuring and standard library improvements help a lot.

I have used FontAwesome in quite a few projects. The icons are CC-BY 4.0, the font is SIL OFL and the code has an Expat license.

You do not need to sign up with an email address, you can simply clone the project from their repository: https://github.com/FortAwesome/Font-Awesome or install it from Packagist: https://packagist.org/packages/fortawesome/font-awesome
