Switzerland passes law requiring #OpenSource software in the public sector. "All public bodies must disclose the source code of software developed by or for them, unless precluded by third-party rights or security concerns" Well done @maemst, great work!

@webmink @maemst security concerns? What a bogus reasoning. That's security by obscurity. In othet words: no security at all.

Seems like a loophole everybody will abuse endlessly

@webmink @maemst — Could someone in-the-know help me understand if "public money, public code" also applies to investigators receiving public funds in the form of research grants?

🇬🇧 Is your government supporting #ChatControl? Do you want it to? Help change its position in time for the next vote later this year (it will be extremely tight)!
This is what you can do now to save privacy and encryption:

Sharepic showing a map of Europe. "Help Stop #ChatControl! Is your government opposing yet?" Showing most of the EU coloured in red, for "in favour" of chatcontrol.
"Act now! www.chatcontrol.eu" and the logo of the European Pirates and the Greens Group of the European Parliament.

@echo_pbreyer Shit like this makes me want to hate the EU, and I don't want to hate! We should all sing the EDRi petition: crm.edri.org/stop-scanning-me

nulll

@echo_pbreyer it's sadly in Italy we don't have politicians like you!

Vincent 🌻🇪🇺

@echo_pbreyer To make it more concrete - this will mean Signal will no longer be available to EU citizens (and corporations). They choose that over crippling their app.

How this is supposed to help EU security is the question everyone should ask the proponents of this misleading piece of legislation

Niki Tonsky

Roman Busygin

The Russian missile that destroyed the Okhmatdet Children’s Hospital in Kiev contained many Westerns chips. Russia is making nearly 8 times more Kh-101s than before 2022.

Most of Western sanctions don’t work (Russia still has a great money flow into the country and no big problems of buying chips for rockets) or even help the war (like blocking money flow away from Russia).

Most sanctions were just an impulsive act to show participation.

(Carrer Nou, 16).

For prototyping I can recommend @penpot. No AI and it's free to use.

You can self-host it, because it is free as in open source. And beer. And freedom.

"the internet is a resilient network"

the internet when one cdn goes down:

@rolltime Outage limited to the US east coast.
Seems resilient from over here… One region of one CDN can go down without dragging other parts of the net down with it.

When placed side by side with 3D models of both the Kh-101 and the AIM-120, the missile clearly shares more characteristics with the Kh-101, a cruise missile used exclusively by the Russian armed forces.

Left and right, 3D models created by Bellingcat of a Kh-101 and an AIM-120, respectively. Centre, a screenshot from a video showing the missile that hit the hospital. Note that the features of the missile that hit the hospital closely match those of the Kh-101, but not at all those of the AIM-120 model (Source:Michael Sheldon/Telegram)

The last time all people were together on the planet Earth was October 31, 2000.

Since that day, for all 24 years at least some people have been living off Earth, as astronauts have been on constant non-stop duty on the ISS.

Local-First.

Intel's Pentium processor (1993) was a big jump in processor performance, starting a brand that lasted until 2023. But what's inside the Pentium chip? How did Intel organize its 3.3 million transistors? Let's take a look inside and see the chip's "standard cells". 1/21

A photo of the Pentium processor in its ceramic package. The package has many golden pins sticking out of it. The silicon chip itself is exposed in the middle. The patterns on the chip are visible in shimmering colors.
Ken Shirriff

The fingernail-sized Pentium chip under a microscope. Some parts, like the cache and datapath were highly optimized by hand. Less critical areas, outlined in red, were designed by software using standard cells. The rows of cells are visible as gray columns. 2/21

A photo of the Pentium die under a microscope. The metal layers have been removed to show the underlying silicon circuits. Key functional blocks such as instruction decoding, microcode, and the cache are highlighted. Red boxes surround the many parts of the chip that use standard cells. This die is the P54C variant of the Pentium.

@kenshirriff thanks so much for this..really interesting stuff, especially the photographs.

@kenshirriff why am I looking at this and thinking it'd make a wonderfully geeky rug or blanket pattern?

And finally, an Iranian official worries that the (Russian) Hamster Kombat crypto-clicker game is a part of the West’s “soft war” to interfere with elections by distracting Iranians.

A game called Hamster Kombat has taken the crypto world and Telegram users by storm, as an application that runs on the messaging platform’s new “mini-apps” infrastructure. As with most blockchain games, it’s more about money than it is about fun, and gameplay mostly involves mashing your hamster avatar, Cookie Clicker style, and spamming your friends with referral codes. The future of gaming that we were promised has finally arrived! Despite the fact that the in-game tokens can’t actually be traded for any other kind of currency — crypto or fiat — we’re beginning to see a similar story emerging around Hamster Kombat as with Axie Infinity in its heyday. Those living under challenging economic conditions in locations like Iran are turning to Hamster Kombat in desperation, hoping that the team behind it will actually follow through on its promises to launch a crypto token that could allow them to cash out actual money based on their in-game performance. The game has not been warmly received by the Iranian government, and an Iranian military chief has gone so far as to accuse the Hamster Kombat developers of harming the country’s elections by distracting its populace. “One of the features of the soft war by the enemy is the ‘Hamster’ game,” he said to local news.16
