@mcc the life / not-life debate on viruses is super interesting. there's a fascinating model called "virocells", wherein the naked viral form is considered to be reproductive material, whereas the infected cell _is_ the living viral organism. on the surface it's a neat solution to the taxonomic problem, but it has super weird implications once you try to use the same model to classify prions.

LRT: Lol Linux really is emerging as the true gaming OS, better framerate, better battery life. This year we're seeing multiple sources report higher than ever before seen Linux % of desktop observances. Might finally be the first year of the linux desktop lol

J. "Henry" Waugh

@dan_ballard I do hope so

But you'll forgive my strong caution given the number of times I've read it before 😔

Dan Ballard

might be heading to a 5x25 scenario! 🤣 Better late than never

On September 9th, Notion will delete the data of all Russian users due to new U.S. sanctions.

This is why "file over app" is essential — you should not be subject to the whims of platforms and governments. Be sovereign of your own data.

Restrictions for customers based in Russia

The U.S. government has introduced restrictions prohibiting access to certain software products and services to any person in Russia. Due to these restrictions, on September 9, 2024, Notion will no longer provide users located in Russia access to the platform. This includes:

Preventing users from accessing Notion’s services while in Russia. Users in workspaces that have never had billing associated with Russia will be able to regain access to Notion once outside Russia.

If any billing information connected with the workspace is currently or was previously associated with Russia, the workspace will be terminated. This is necessary for compliance with sanctions, and updating an account’s billing information will not change the restriction.

Terminating subscription payments for all plans identified as having any billing information associated with Russia, historical or current.

Impacted users will be able to access their workspaces through September 8, 2024. On September 9, 2024, the workspaces will no longer be accessible and users located in Russia will no longer be able to access Notion’s services.

@kepano It’s not due to sanctions, but due to running unprovoked and genocide war against Ukraine.

“Peace over war” and “Life over death” are essential. Those who spitting on international law and executing aggression against sovereign countries must be banned from using any tech created by free world.

Great interview with @Mer__edith in @WIRED from @agreenberg talking @signalapp, #surveillance, #privacy and #sustainability

"Signal is a nonprofit because a for-profit structure leads to a scenario where one of my board members goes to Davos, talks to some guy, comes back excitedly telling me we need an AI strategy for profit. Or another one of my board members comes in, gets really nervous that our revenue model, whatever it is, isn’t bringing in something that meets our goals and says, “Well, maybe we can start collecting metadata. Maybe we can reduce the focus on privacy, because of course our primary objective function, as a traditional for-profit, is revenue and growth.” And privacy in an economy powered by surveillance will necessarily hamper those."

@KathyReid @Mer__edith @WIRED @agreenberg @signalapp This is a casual interview that feels profound and transformative

@KathyReid damn it really has to be spelled out like you're talking to kids. I hope most wired readers are smarter but maybe that's optimistic

'The Verge said that the iPhone is now “more fun” in the EU. Noted iOS expert Federico Viticci wrote that the EU version of iOS “is the version of iOS I’ve wanted for the past few years,” and that “we can finally use our phones like actual computers.”''

@brucelawson What the hell are these people doing on their phones? Just because I can run an emulator on it doesn't make iOS any better.

The last Russian Emperor Nicholas II was influenced not only by famous Rasputin.

French magician Nizier Philippe really influenced political decisions.

“Remember that m-r Philippe said that you should not give a constitution, as it will be the ruin of Russia and you.”

4 Feb 1993, a 5km wide light, brighter than the full moon slashes across Europe. It’s Znamya 2, an orbital mirror experiment led by Vladimir Syromyatnikov, which burns up hours later. More sunlight equals more agricultural capability but the collapse of the USSR ends the project.

The Znamya 2 solar mirror experiment deployed. It looks like a strange aluminum flower drifting in space. Some sunlight glints off one of the Mylar foil mirrors.

Never thought to try reverse wireless charging an electric toothbrush...but it might actually work lol.

Also neat: Just found out you can use the cover screen of the Galaxy Z Fold 6 while you're wirelessly charging another device!

Mishaal Rahman

There's a caveat with charging an electric toothbrush using your phone, though: Your phone might not detect that something is actually being charged and so to save battery, it'll automatically turn off reverse wireless charging.

So unfortunately I don't know if you can actually fully charge an electric toothbrush this way. Even if you could, you'd need to constantly turn reverse wireless charging back on, which is a huge pain.

Thank you for sharing.

My brain isn’t wired that way but I so appreciate those of you whose brains are.

Reading through the French prosecutor's press release re: Pavel Durov and Telegram, it's still not clear what is going on, but the last three items are a big red flag.

-Providing cryptology services aiming to ensure confidentiality without certified
declaration,
- Providing a cryptology tool not solely ensuring authentication or integrity
monitoring without prior declaration,
- Importing a cryptology tool ensuring authentication or integrity monitoring

@evacide Would "providing a cryptology tool" mean I'd get arrested for bringing my laptop to France? It has GPG, ssh, and sshd on it, not to mention openssl. That let's me use rsync to back up some directories. I'll use GPG to encrypt a separate copy of Firefox login data.

Stuart Longland (VK4MSL)

@evacide Didn't France once ban encryption over the Internet? I expect that to work as well today as it did in the early 20C when the International Telegraph Union tried it.

1/ Over 600,000 Russians are estimated to have left their country since 2022 in the biggest exodus since the post-Soviet period. Many have left to avoid being mobilised to fight. One man managed to escape into exile after deserting the Russian Army twice. ⬇️

ChrisO_wiki

2/ Govorit NeMoskva tells the story of Alexander, a 46-year-old who was the chief engineer of a large construction company. When mobilisation was announced in September 2022, he believed that he would be protected by his company. He soon found this was not the case.

pnpm.io/cli/deploy

My dudes, Telegram is not an e2e messaging app like Signal or WhatsApp. Telegram is more like Twitter. It is a social media app that is mostly public content that also happens to have DMs, where you can turn on e2e messaging with questionable cryptography that most people never even bother to use.

If you, just like me, wanted to try Dev Containers, but couldn't, because there was no support in VS Codium, I made an extension. I made it primarily for my own needs but I invite you to try it and contribute too.

The way it works is extremely simple. It builds containers with DevPod (github.com/loft-sh/devpod) and connects to them using Open SSH extension (github.com/jeanp413/open-remot). That's it.

You can find it at:
- github.com/3timeslazy/vscodium
- open-vsx.org/extension/3timesl

While making this extension, I also wrote some of my thoughts about dev containers tooling. You can read them here: techhub.social/@3timeslazy/113

I would also like to mention @sitnik_ru 's thread on this topic: mastodon.social/@sitnik_ru/112. I knew about devcontainers before, but this thread nudged me to try them again and eventually create my extension. As a thank you, I made a couple of contributions to the slowreader (github.com/hplush/slowreader).
