Having spent a little time on Bluesky (leolaporte.me) I'm here to report that I'm sticking with Mastodon.

Too many people want Bluesky to replicate Twitter - and the outrage machine is already spinning up.

The ATProtocol is interesting - but I'm not sure it's significantly better than ActivityPub.

The homegrown feel here just feels better to me. More small town than big city. But I'll keep an eye on Bluesky. I'm not writing it off yet.

@leo I haven't gotten in yet, but that seems to match my feelings. It's has some inherent design flaws (no blocking) but the real test is how it evolves as it grows.

Oh 2 ten

@leo Same - not writing it off just yet. They're working on adding federation and blocking. I am hoping that once federation is live, they can release the server side software for self-hosting.

People are quick to dismiss - but it is still BETA.

I can't help but notice many toots from helpful newbies encouraging you to support the Mastodon Patreon.

It's fine to do that but understand it goes to just two big instances and the official Mastodon dev team.

It does NOT trickle down to YOUR instance. If you want to support your server, donate to it directly. Nearly all the costs of the explosive growth of the past few weeks is borne by local instances.

Mastodon is decentralized. There is no Mastodon Inc. This is not Twitter.

Hint: If you click on "announcements" (the megaphone icon on your Home timeline) you will generally see how to support your local server. Please consider a monthly donation.

Now that we're learning this lesson that centralized silos are brittle and operate in the interest of the owners not the users...

...please note the move toward centralizing podcasts into apps from Amazon/Audible, Spotify, iHeart, YouTube, TikTok etc.

If you like podcasts, use an RSS-based podcast player. Support the open ecosystem. We can only survive if you clearly see the threat and act supportively.

@leo I’m a big fan of and believer in @marcoarment’s @overcast app.

@leo Not enough *Amen* to say here. When Amazon came calling for podcasts to put on their site I honestly thought "nah, get your own content".

@leo I am currently moving away from Podkicker Pro since it's minorly buggy and making horrible UI decisions and adding ads despite the fact I've paid for it and moving to @AntennaPod since it seems to be solid and doesn't have ads or crypto bullshit

Despite the many minutes I had to spend setting it up, I really like the new Vivaldi. It's now my default browser on Mac and Linux.

With RSS feeds built in:). I'm going to try it again

@leo It's great! Overwhelming at first but you can really grow into it. And being Chromium based means it's super easy to migrate plugins and stuff. Do it folks! :)

Yeah it's a good one. As someone who used the old Opera before, I feel right at home. Though it did inherit the bad stuff from Opera too — like the team's ignorance of minor bugs and, generally, not a very perfectionistic approach to quality.
