While I love the recent Bluesky rally, I also want to remind everyone that Mastodon is the only major social media that is properly decentralized, billionaire-proof and VC-free for now. I get that most people couldn't care less about protocols, but if you do, I recommend maintaining a presence here :)

@Techaltar Mastodon is the only? aren't you forgetting the dozens of other platform software that are part of the Fediverse's ecosystem???

@Techaltar I think that fundamentally, one should think of Blue Sky as what Twitter would have been if it hadn't degenerated into the hostile garbage that X became.

I know a few folks who are loving Blue Sky.

But, if we have chosen Mastodon (or the Fediverse) because we don't want to be manipulated, experimented, or tracked by a proprietary algorithm, or be subserviant to the whim of a venture capitalist, then we are exactly where we belong. :-)

@Techaltar @singe Totally. And even if some future VC were to offer Eugen a truckload of $$ (I think he's mentioned being approached by certain money-having parties and turning them down), but even if he were to take it, the larger Fediverse would live on through the variety of forks and other AP-compatible platforms out there. This is the place to be for sure 😄👍

Wow, quite a bombshell! Ecosia & Qwant join forces to build own search index. Their reasons:
- Bing massively raising API costs
- geopolitical risk with US increased
- EU DMA rules make competition easier
- GenAI massively changes search, is both a threat & opportunity

Rollout starts in France next quarter already 🤯

@Techaltar - Can't we just have a search without AI?

Lando

@Techaltar Initially loved the idea: real competition in the search sphere would be great, and it’s cool that the two companies are partnering to make that happen. Also like the supposed privacy centric approach to results.

But the significant focus on GenAI kills a lot of the vibe for me. I don’t believe GenAI will have a meaningful part to play in effective search engines, and even if they did I don’t think it’s worth the resource consumption. Fees like Google tech bros all over again

@Techaltar I think a fundamentalist has some things to complain about @protonprivacy .
I, for one, am very satisfied about the services and development, though the only thing I found confusing is the strong claim to open source and the delays in some cases.

For example, the Proton Drive applications (apart from web) were not published until very recently, even though the service is on the market; on the other hand, the Proton Wallet application's source code is already published as a Flutter

@Techaltar
I should probably use more of their services.

@Techaltar I really wanted to move to using proton drive, but it does not support file upload/edit via link if the other person does not have an account, which is a deal breaker for me. Currently using nextcloud which does not force anyone into creating an account, if possible.

Absolutely insane story of a Ukranian girl getting her face cloned & deepfaked into dozens of pro-Russian digital influencers on Chinese social media.

I fear this flood of AI shit is truly going to break the internet
