On a more serious note, regardless of how you feel about those figures, this is just… weird, and I’m surprised that this got past any sort of review. Even more strange that this is the “correct” example of high quality content for a screenshot.

Lea

For those who don't know, the other contacts in the example screenshot are other communist revolutionaries and figures. Not just Karl Marx.. hey, at least they put effort into it.

Cassidy James :eos: :gg: :fh:

@lea lol I am pretty sure it came from a designer having some fun in a mockup; it has accidentally created some enlightening commentary, though. :)

@lea (you can only volunteer to create so many app designs without losing your mind, sometimes you gotta mix it up!)

Lea

@cassidy I will admit, John and Jane Doe do get pretty boring over time.

think we can all appreciate a good design shitpost.. just, maybe this isn't the right context :p

Brodie Robertson

@lea I couldn't tell past the 5 pixels in the "good" screenshot lol

Lea

@BrodieOnLinux yeah, assumed most people wouldn't :p

Brodie Robertson

@lea It's just pointless drama to use Karl Marx as an example, it serves the purpose but you know people are going to harass you for it. Just use a cat picture or AI generate a face

Lea

@BrodieOnLinux I mean, if it were me or fyra, I'd do cats or catgirls :3

completely agree though

jade

@lea @BrodieOnLinux we do this on our websites, if you check fyralabs.com/services we use manx@nekocorp.com as an example email (we rotate the breed when we make updates). If we were screenshotting a contacts app I'd use our favourite @owen pic, like on tauos.co

Jordan Petridis

@BrodieOnLinux @lea What’s pointless is that attitude and instant “disapproval” of it as if it’s a serious matter or means anything.

You are trying to get ahead of the supposed “hate mail” and harassment of it as you give a shit and play the smartass, when in reality it’s yet another reactionary lip service masquerading as “apolitical” under the disguise of “caring for the project and the impact”

Jordan Petridis

@BrodieOnLinux @lea Newsflash, this says a lot more about the people making a fuss about it than who is depicted in the mockup.

The designers and people involved in the project are humans, not apolitical husks.

Politics are part of their everyday lives, work and shape the software that ends up in your desktop.

This is plain dehumanization on the basis of “omg this is not appropriate or not the time for it” and it’s done to serve a specific purpose, willingly or not.

Disgusting.

Brodie Robertson

@alatiera @lea If a project used a picture of Hitler in the example would you think this is a good idea if that's there political stance

Jordan Petridis

@BrodieOnLinux @lea You are self reporting now dude. You are the only one that thinks these are equal things here

Brodie Robertson

@alatiera @lea It was an example, pick any figure that you don't particularly like

TheEvilSkeleton

@BrodieOnLinux I mean, there's a massive difference between using a picture of someone with ideas and someone directly linked to genocide

@alatiera @lea

Maksym Hazevych

@TheEvilSkeleton @BrodieOnLinux @alatiera @lea but consider that not everyone from former Soviet Union (or more realistically empire) would like to see a part of their enslaver's culture (marxism-leninism) which was forced on them by all the usual ways — executions, genocide, mass starvation...

He may not be directly related to any of that, but his presence isn't welcomed by everyone. Having such figures in examples is absolutely unprofessional.

TheEvilSkeleton

@mks_h oh I agree that having a picture of him shouldn't have been used. The comparison just irked me that I had to respond

@BrodieOnLinux @alatiera @lea

Maksym Hazevych

@joojmachine @TheEvilSkeleton @BrodieOnLinux @alatiera @lea the only proper reaction of a communist fanboy to a fellow national liberty enjoyer.

Maksym Hazevych

@TheEvilSkeleton @BrodieOnLinux @alatiera @lea just to prove a point, Nestor Makhno, whom you can see in the sidebar… He's a Ukrainian who fought both alongside and against pretty much everyone, i.e. Bolsheviks, Austrians, various Ukrainian groups, etc. He's Wikipedia page is Game of Thrones level of action. IMHO, the epitome of controversial figure. But, we don't hold strong opinions on our own figures, and it's more of a happy "Ukraine mentioned (outside of the war context) moment" occurrence.

Brodie Robertson

@TheEvilSkeleton It was an intentionally inflammatory example, the point I was getting at was it's not seen as issue if you're someone that likes the person, but there are a lot of people out there who don't and all including them does is makes you a target for needless harassment.

@alatiera @lea

Brodie Robertson

@TheEvilSkeleton @alatiera @lea When you're already a target if you're from a project like GNOME for example there's no point painting a bigger one on your back for no reason at all

kbal

Now that's how you do Godwin's Law the old-fashioned way, i.e. the sudden out of nowhere uncalled-for irrefutable discussion-endingly stupid way.

Daimar Stein :tux: :comunista:

@BrodieOnLinux @alatiera @lea jesus christ brodie, just take the L and realize that the video was in poor taste already

Haelwenn /элвэн/ :triskell:
@lea lol, of course Makno wouldn't have a profile picture.
WerySkok :verified_think:

@lea they could've easily put famous inventors, scientists or fictional characters instead of controversial historical figures
