@thomasfuchs Hey now, VR is actually cool tech, it just needs more good software.

@jesse It's cool tech, but that doesn't mean people want to strap a computer to their face.

Most people will never, ever, want it outside the novelty factor to try it a few times. (Another issue is that a lot of people get sick from it instantly).

It's just not a technology that will ever be attractive for the mainstream--but tech companies are desperately trying to make it happen.

@jesse (And because it's not mainstream, there isn't much high-quality software for it.)

The potential is there in the gaming space but it doesn't look like any of the major operators are willing to go all in on it to give it the push it would need to gain widespread adoption. Anecdotally at least everyone I know who has a VR device and continues to use it regularly after playing through the handful of quality games available mostly uses it for VRChat. That seems to be the only thing that keeps them from collecting dust on a shelf.

@thomasfuchs@hachyderm.io @jesse@social.jelliefrontier.net VR glasses do get lighter and lighter.
Motion sickness could be avoided with simpler movements (like all those rythm games - almost nobody gets sick from Beat Saber) or 3rd party view (like Moss), but too many game developers (and quite a bit of the players) think VR games need to be 1st player to be "immersive".

But not seeing the rest of the surroundings, or just as a warped camera image, and having to wear something sure has its disadvantages, so I doubt it'll ever be mainstream as well.

@thomasfuchs I get your point about inconvenience, but I don’t think it’s fair to lump VR in with exploitative tech like crypto, NFTs, and LLMs.

These seem more like solvable ergonomic issues rather than a fundamental problem.

@jesse I’m looking at it from a standpoint of what the tech industry is hyping and how they’re hyping it

They’re often not doing the tech they invent justice because they want to gamble for maximum profits instead of settling for smaller sustainable business
