i frankly find it absurd that furniture doesn't exist to hide routers and smart home bridges next to your sofa. how is it that people need a chip and dip tray built into a side table but nobody has ever needed to hide a homebridge server in their living room.

a google search for “end table home server” yields a side table with a chip serving tray built in

input is welcome if anyone has thoughts on how to manage this unholy corner. please don’t say server rack.

@samhenrigold a little end table with shelves. Maybe one with doors on the front.

@samhenrigold if you find something you like better and the drawers aren’t open on the back just get a hole saw for a drill and make one.

@samhenrigold move the chair in front of it, and no one shall ever know 😌

@nileane But I'll know. And that will eat me up inside.

@samhenrigold Bookshelf. Put books on it and your electronics will disappear into it.

@samhenrigold How about a nice little mid-century bar cabinet? Put the electronics on the bottom of the shelf. Something like this:

@samhenrigold I went with the IKEA KALLAX in natural wood color which has a nice open back and lined up well with the outlets on the wall. Obviously the front is still open, but after I picked up extra-short power, coax, and Ethernet cables it looks fairly slick. Fits my 4-bay JBOD + Mac mini pretty exactly in one of the cubes.

A picture of the KALLAX from the IKEA website, in white. It’s a wooden grid with 4 rows and 2 columns, a couple of feet deep.

@jedfox This might work well in my bedroom/office where I need to visually split the room in the middle… 🤔

@samhenrigold it also has the convenient feature that it is orientation independent so you can choose based on vibes whether you want to have it tall or wide after assembly.

@ana never bet against the Big Plant industry

@samhenrigold I will take this as tacit Gen Z approval for Millennial mid-century aesthetic.

sam henri gold

@kyle I inherited a LOT of mid century stuff and I'm too deep in it at this point to change styles

@samhenrigold we put that stuff in an IKEA cabinet with smoked windows. I can see the status light colors, but only vaguely

sam henri gold, it's strange that you have your internet cable enter the apartment what looks like from the outside. Is this a normal thing to do in the US? People here usually have their routers in hallways or closets.

sam henri gold

@grishka it enters from the hall doorway, the fiber optic cable happens to terminate next to the window.

@samhenrigold I just cut holes in the back of drawers. Makes for easy access too - just pull out the drawer, and all the stuff is in one place.
