ahhh that CM-2

That right there is how we rebuild the Torment Nexus

From the hit book "Don't Rebuild the Torment Nexus"

but it looks so cool Imma do it anyway

Dang, from the looks of it, I guessed the CM-2 was from the early 2000s or late 90s at earliest. WAY ahead of its time, design-wise.

I'm somewhat glad that Olivetti died out before they could be transformed into yet another soulless-black-slab manufacturer.

@th last one reminds me of the ME controller from Applied Energistics 2

Magnus Ahltorp

@nil @th We had a Connection Machine chassis in our corridor as an art object, including the bar counter shaped cabinet.

vxo

@th @kjhealy WOW. What is that machine with the big pleasantly lavender o r b ?

dpflug

@vxo
The caption says it's an oliveti terminal. Striking, isn't it?
@th @kjhealy

vxo

@dpflug @th @kjhealy yes! I missed the caption... at first I thought that was a pointing device

BensGreenGamingAc

@vxo @th @kjhealy That’s the monitor! Imagine the neck strain!

vxo

@green_bens @th @kjhealy yeah, and I thought driving our stupid GMC Terrain at work caused weird neck and shoulder strain lol

I swear, that thing has the most murderously terrible ergonomics

@th @kjhealy Make the future feel like the future with design— my soul yearns.

DELETED

@th @kjhealy The last one reminds me of WOPR from wargames :blobcatpaw:

@th @kjhealy I can't tell if this is AI generated or not! :D

The first is a police communicator.
The second is a 70s French Minitel.
The third is an Olivetti I’ve never seen. I bet it’s a non-production design. It’s beautiful like all their shit.
The last is a Thinking Machine from the 90s.

@th @kjhealy
I almost bought a Next just for the look
great photos

ionizedGirl

@th @kjhealy posting the connection machine isn't fair

@th @kjhealy
yeah ... although, I'm sure that to people who aren't either goths or computer nerds, the cm-2 (4th pic) looks extremely ominous and threatening; just think how that look has been used in various movies and video games.

Montgomery Gator

@th @kjhealy Three of those are terminals, so you could totally still use them today.

Heck, hide a pi zero w inside them and you can do some modern retro computing!

The other machine though? NSF NCAR has an archive footage of one running and it's as rad as you think! youtu.be/SZ1RcNxiNX8?t=202

@th @kjhealy need more orb in our computers. bring back orb

@th @kjhealy That Motorola 9100T looks like a great writing computer, actually. Proper keyboard, clear text, distraction-free, sensible number of words-per-line. Would probably beat most "electron" based text editors into a cocked hat, anyway, 😄 .
