Hello!

It's me again: Your yearly reminder that drives fail, SSDs bitrot, and you probably need to do a review of your backup strategy. You should have at least two copies of anything you care about.

This message brought to you by a second drive in my ZFS array failing while the first one was still rebuilding. Happy holidays.

(It's fine, I run the array in raidz2 so i can have two drives fail before losing data - specifically because this situation happens more often than you'd think and this is not my first time)

@jonty Even when I was still looking after such things (5+ years) Enterprisey storage array boxes won't let you set them up with a 1 disk failure tolerance.

Ray?

@jonty I've been setting up raid z2 on five drives. I know raid is not a backup, but I also feel like that's good enough for me.

@jonty I wish Synology supported tape backup.

@jonty And never (ever!) Let your zfs pool get full.
