I think that fully integrating #ActivityPub into Flipboard's backend is going to be one of the best things we've done since we started the company.

There are three phases:

Phase 1 (Today): Federate 25 accounts to test and learn

Phase 2 (January): Enable anyone in the Fediverse to engage with any public curator on Flipboard

Phase 3 (April): Enable anyone on Flipboard to follow and engage with any public account in the #Fediverse

@mike thank you so much, this will be a truly revolution

Millions :biflag:

@astrojuanlu it’s gonna be weird having 2 fediverse verge accounts, is the flipboard one gonna be the main one now that it’s on the fediverse or are they both gonna coexist

Mike McCue

@millions @astrojuanlu Yes, that's part of the test. Publishers and creators will likely have multiple accounts for different use cases (i.e. kind of like how you can follow me on mastodon, flipboard or pixelfed... I use each account to post different content for different reasons)

Exactly how this all settles out is something we're all learning together in real time right now.

@mike I think you should use the full follower count from Flipboard rather than resetting to Zero once these are fully integrated.

@Transportist @mike i'm fairly sure that all followers need to be "actual" fedi accounts, so the count will be accurate once they federate all the accounts.

@millions @astrojuanlu I would suspect the official mastodon account will remain the primary account as they've revealed on the podcast that they're moving their content management system over to wordpress for fediverse support. The Verge is one of the few companies that seem to be all-in on the fediverse.

@astrojuanlu @millions a lot of people have multiple accounts across platforms. I use my own pixelfed server and this mastodon account.

@mike @fediversereport In my opinion it’s setting a high bar for other companies to follow. If I can’t engage with them on my own terms (ie. activitypub) then I probably won’t engage with them at all. So, thank you for doing it.

@mike What would be nice to have is an actual list of accounts across the #Fediverse that y'all are federating . While I know the article shows an image of companies, I'm more referring to a list of the actual account names that we can click and follow or paste into the search bar of Mastodon and follow there. Would make things so much easier.

For example, @verge is that the account y'all are dealing/working with or some other account?

Cliffy Claus πŸŽ…

@mike To clarify a bit more in case it wasn't very clear...

We need/want links to the official accounts that Flipboard is working with so we're not following or trying to interact with all of these bot accounts, fake accounts or whatever of news sites that random people have added to the Fediverse.

Might be a good page on the Flipboard site that gets linked to and we can grab the list from there.

Flipboard

@CliffWade @mike Hi Cliff! You can find all the federated accounts here in our pinned thread here: flipboard.social/@Flipboard/11

@Flipboard @mike Absolutely perfect. Thank you very much for the quick response.

I assume this list will keep being updated?

Also, are these accounts considered official? As in, will they ever be "verified" accounts? Just quickly looking, I see @theverge isn't considered verified, so it's hard to know that we should be following this account as an official account.

Verification here in the #Fediverse is very important, as I'm sure y'all know.

Mike McCue

@CliffWade we'll continue to federate some accounts between now and January which we'll announce. When we do phase 2 the list will be hundreds of thousands of accounts globally.

Cliffy Claus πŸŽ…

@mike That is absolutely amazing! I'm looking forward to that, especially as someone that runs a #Tech related instance and is always looking for great sites/accounts, users to follow and to recommend to our users.

@cliffwade @Flipboard @mike @theverge verification's done by either looking at the domain name, if applicable (as in, if the account is on an official instance like at mozilla at mozilla dot social), or looking at the profile fields to see if there is a verified one (this is usually a link highlighed in green, with a tick next to it). the only issue with this is that neither are really used by official accounts very often (setting up an instance is hard for non-technical users, and the verified link feature is not widely known).

@mike Awesome. Thank you so much. Glad to have y'all here and certainly glad to see y'all listening to feedback and taking action on things that you can.
