my cold take on the Threads federation thing is: if you simply consider them not as some mystical "platform" but as any other "instance", then they're an over-sized under-moderated data-scraping instance housing many vile users right up to the point of "technically legal free speech"... and we've all suspended instances before for much less.

I've said it before, but Meta is the only instance operator currently sending me a class action lawsuit payment for past data abuses

Kevin Riggle

@touk cynically, that is just solely because no other instance is large enough or has been around long enough to be worth suingโ€ฆ yet.

Fat Bear, Weak

@kevinriggle @touk well the other instances would need to successfully keep data first

Touk

wow this blew up, check out my Settings > Moderation > Federation > Add New Domain Block > threads.net > Suspend

Touk

@Thomas I just keep sending you my personal information! and you haven't done anything illegal with it yet!! hurry up man

Halloween Demon Dad

@touk turns out I can make a lot of money with your data in ways that are totally legal!

Jon

@touk that's it, the solution to fediverse sustainability:
1) federate with meta
2) wait for them to abuse the data (which should take about 15 seconds) and the class action settlement (8-10 years)
3) Profit!!!!!

@touk I... can't really argue with that. You're right.

@touk @are0h I was just reading the DNA Lounge blog with this summary.

@touk I'm not going to rush to block the entire #threads instance as I have a lot of friends on #facebook and many of them suffer from odd preconceptions about mastodon being overly complicated and other nonsense so their first experience of the #fediverse will likely be through threads, and I'd like to welcome them here. But I won't hesitate to block anyone thinking they can troll or be racist, anti inclusivity or fascist. Not for a second.

always tired (moved to chaos)

@rozeboosje @touk That devolves the work on many marginalized people, duplicated for each, when it's actually part of instance moderation at least on instances that actually care for marginalized people

Josh

@project1enigma @rozeboosje @touk Yes, this. Imagine being someone the racists like to target. You get a ton of abuse constantly; you can block people, sure. You can block the instances, sure. But if you join/use Mastodon and that's the first thing you get, it is not good. And if the admins of your server figure well, we won't block that server which you keep getting abuse from, that reflects poorly to say the least.

@rozeboosje @touk Are you ready to moderate all of Threads? 'Cause that will be necessary if you don't want to throw the safety of others under the bus. Even if you block the most well known bullshitters like "LibsOfTiktok" or "PragerU" there are too many for single moderators to handle.

The over-sized part is the thing which scares me the most. If they are large enough they could get away with breaking federation.

Anyone who finds more than a third of their "contacts" to be on Threads should be scared of Threads. And that holds true regardless of whether your own profile is on Threads or not.

@touk You are exactly right. The benchmark for a decent standard should not be lowered for whatever excuses. There seems to no valid reasons other than the usual โ€˜bigger is betterโ€™ diatribe.

@touk@dads.cool One thing I found out and seems to be true for my testing on one instance is that if they block them they counter block you. So go into it knowing it is probably not a reversible decision, though I can't see wanting to reverse it.

Personally I see it as part of the EEE plan, they want to divide the fediverse into instances reliably OK with Threads and those not now, in the hope that then people who want to talk to Threads will favour those instances or better yet Threads. A deliberate effort to create a schism.

@touk back in the day you could get Fedi blocked for a typo. Now you can praise Hitlerโ€™s final solution and itโ€™s all hunky dory.

Mr Bitterness

@touk well sure, if you're going to bring logic & reason into this.

Stephan

@touk that's why we'll treat threads like any other instance and probably block them very soon

Spokeek

@touk I mean, that's true, but that is not the only thing to consider either. Not saying it's not relevant, just that it's not the whole story.
And in my opinion, at least for now, i would accept it to keep legitimate the tech and philosophy that way.

@touk Yep. But in the past, we did not defederate A from B because B did not defederate from C.
