. @ploum I hadn't thought or cared too much about the metafedi thing but your post woke me up. I had avidly used XMPP (then Jabber) a couple of decades ago and forgot what Google did to it. It was particularly dastardly considering that they've never had a coherent messaging strategy. They just felt it necessary to cripple a FOSS competitor.

If Threads withers after federating, it's not a huge loss for Meta, but could be catastrophic for Mastodon.
