Albania was between several empires and religions. The Ottoman Empire imposed the Arabic script on them, the Catholics imposed the Latin script, the Orthodox imposed the Cyrillic script.

So in the 19th century they came up with their own independent writing system, which is not based on the other scripts.

But in reality, the Latin alphabet won. It was already on typewriters that were imported into the country.
