You'd be amazed how often companies randomly break laws. It's a little like "freedom of expression" and "supreme court found dress codes unconstitutional" in the US, versus how schools often act anyway.
@v@danluu in US labor law, you cannot discriminate against someone because of their age, but only if they are 40+ years old. Age discrimination is totally ok if they are under 40.
