@gamingonlinux That and it's also basically Chrome. The vast majority of people don't realize that outside of Firefox and Safari just about every other browser is basically Chrome with a fake nose and glasses. And while the Ad blocking situation has everyone's attention right now, there are other reasons not to use Chrome, like the rampant data collection Google has done with it for years. @gamingonlinux People should get off Google's base period @gamingonlinux I'd like to know what kind of shady stuff we are talking about here. I thought Brave was a pretty solid option. 🤔 @gamingonlinux is there anything positive or negative to say about Ungoogled Chromium? https://github.com/ungoogled-software/ungoogled-chromium Anyone that pays me for using their free service immediately gets the big question mark. No one does anything for free. And no one does anything at a loss. Same goes for “free VPNs”. @gamingonlinux I'm waiting for the day when GNOME Web takes over the web browser space, it's the only browser that alone makes me laugh, because when I log in to anything I see the session advertised as "Safari on Linux". @gamingonlinux Also I wonder if they would just leave in the adblocker-breaking stuff. For all the people asking what: Google exists. Seriously. It's often quicker to use Google than it is to ask. This real basic example took less than 30 seconds to find: https://www.spacebar.news/p/stop-using-brave-browser There's numerous more. @gamingonlinux I mean, if know they're not going to tweak they're Firefox. I just recommend Brave. still the best chromium browser on mobile @gamingonlinux Thanks! That was a pretty good summary. I guess I didn't search hard enough. @gamingonlinux I"f you want a privacy-focused web browser, use Firefox or Vivaldi." I installed Vivaldi. Just now. Wow. @gamingonlinux Thanks for this article. I knew about the Prop 8 stuff, but was fuzzy on the ad-blocking tech. It's interesting to me that, rather than replacing behavior-based advertising with the proven content-based advertising model, Brave decides to double-down on enshittification by adding shady crypto to the mix. This was the connection I needed. A pox on Google and Brave. Fuck em all. Is this the fourth or fifth time I have been pointed to this link. Which says: the guy who wrote it is a bit sketchy. Don't care. The optional bitcoin thing is a bit sketchy. Don't care. They made a mistake inserting code into URLs which they have since fixed. So far it works for me without memory leaks or obvious issues. @gamingonlinux @privacyguides Opinions on this? Brave is still recommended as the first option to mobile web browser in PrivacyGuides website. @gamingonlinux fundamentally I think their ideas for client side privacy preserving customized ads and micro payments for viewing them which can be used to pay for content was a good one. It's sad that the implementation was botched but there is so much headwind against replacing the existing fetid system it is an almost impossible job. There's also a certain degree of hypocrisy in people rallying against Brave's ad replacement tactic while simultaneously promoting full on ad blocking. @gamingonlinux I personally just switches to Firefox. I loved it even more and have 0 issues with it @gamingonlinux Still have all my AdBlockers installed though... @gamingonlinux Been happy with Firefox and DuckDuckGo. Still would like to turn my computers from Windows to Linux though. @gamingonlinux anything that runs on Chromium is not a viable alternative to Chrome. @gamingonlinux also want to add that, conversely, just because it uses the same rendering engine as Chrome, doesn't mean it's on the same bullshit. there are a number of Chromium-based projects that exist precisely to remove Google garbage. it will be the same with their proposed API changes. @gamingonlinux Part of the problem here is that every browser choice is shit at the moment There is no way to win. I currently use Brave. I moved to Brave once it became clear a year ago that Google was aiming to kill adblockers because Brave has a built-in one I agree Brave does shady shit, but so does Firefox. Plus Mozilla is obsessed with other peripheral shit and their browser suffers because of it Should anybody use Chrome over Brave? God no. Google is more shady than the rest combined @gamingonlinux Yeah, at one point I thought they were sorta neat, but then they went all cryptobro and then also proceeded to go down to crazy town @gamingonlinux I use Firefox mostly. I'm experimenting with Floorp, and some other options are Waterfox and LibreWolf. All good choices, all based on something other than Chrome, and therefore outside of the Google sphere. It helps keep one megacorp from having a monopoly on the Internet. Continuing to avoid Chrome without embracing The Fox is tough, but there are a few options. On Linux, there's Midori and Gnome Web. On Mac, I'm not sure why you'd care. Just use Safari. @gamingonlinux I remember installing Brave on my laptop (Trisquel GNU/Linux) and it made itself the default browser and a startup application. Yikes! @gamingonlinux Firefox is an incredibly good browser. I don't get why it struggles with popularity. @gamingonlinux Now I understand why each and every time I open something on my PC, I am asked to change to Chrome. @gamingonlinux Too bad Firefox doesn't have several must have features I use on Vivaldi... @gamingonlinux Mozilla has also done shady shit and a bunch of scandals there really isn't any winning here @gamingonlinux sorry I use Edge, if firefox could add the sidebar for tabs nativity and the sidebar as Edge, I will back to it. Jup, I agree. Always get a bit frustrated when people bring up brave as a alternative - when there are many other browsers that are much better then that. Also makes me wonder what Iridium ( https://iridiumbrowser.de/ ) browser will do about the changes in chrome.
@gamingonlinux please be more specific. I am a Brave user because this is the only browser that provides a way to support content and service providers. I am certainly willing to consider complaints but want specifics. |
@gamingonlinux
I personally went Firefox, since a lot of the browser alternatives to Chrome are also based on Chrome...
