So apparently Google is blocking uBlock from Chrome.

I hereby rebrand Google Chrome as "Google Firefox Downloader".

this makes using #Vivaldi #browser all the more attractive! ๐Ÿ™Œ it uses Chrome's engine but gives you your freedom back! #ublock

@maleandroids @selzero @schmidt Well, at least as of a few months ago, it wasn't clear to what extent Vivaldi could maintain support: reddit.com/r/vivaldibrowser/co

(The underlying issue is that support for the APIs which uBlock Origin uses is being dropped from Chrome's "engine"; it may be difficult for Vivaldi to retain it. And the extension will be dropped from the Chrome store regardless. uBlock Origin will release a version that tries to work with Chrome's newer APIs, but probably work worse.)

@maleandroids @selzero @schmidt yeah... until it gets into the wrong hands and from it's proprietary nature, it gets enshittified irreversibly. I like the guys made Vivaldi but after we've pretty much raised the alarms and it still looks like they don't understand the importance of a free and open source license in software development nowadays, I am not sure of the future of it.

@selzero @schmidt De-Google your life as much as you can, mate - it's very peaceful.

I'm currently thinking of setting up my own mail server as Gmail is one of the last pieces of Google I use.

I know it's a complicated process but I also know my brain will drive me down this path as soon as I have a spare few days to wrap my head around it all.

Working on it. And let's also de-meta while we're at it.
btw any suggestions for a drive alternative?

@luftlesen @fkamiah17 @selzero @schmidt I have a Synology NAS and just recently migrated to Synology Drive. Pretty happy so far.

I'm using Nextcloud hosted on hosting.de. I pay 5 EUR per month for 100gb, and you can get a 1gb plan for free. Apps for all platforms and open-source framework so can easily migrate away if needs be

@selzero
Edge now:
*"What is my purpose?"*
"You download Chrome..."

Edge, come 2024:
*"What is my purpose?"*
"You download Firefox..."

@selzero @schmidt I can't wait for the dialog "warning, downloading software from untrusted sources can be dangerous" with only two options [go back] [start a luddite rebellion]

@selzero @schmidt Wow! First they run an awareness campaign for UBO, then one for replacing Chrome with a non-malicious browser! Google's upping their public service game!

@selzero Chrome is also a great browser to download Firefox.

@selzero @schmidt More details on Chrome deprecating the API that lets uBlock Origin work in its current form. uBlock Origin is releasing an alternative that will likely have limited functionality. Glad Firefox is my main browser.

@selzero @schmidt chrome, to me, is what ie used to be: a tool to download another browser

@selzero start new random windows machine, opening edge, downloading chrome, installing, opening chrome, downloading firefox. installing firefox. @schmidt

Hexxy The Grouch

@selzero @schmidt (repeating post) I still need Chrome for specific tasks, but using Googley tools is not one of them. Other things you can do to (I think) make Google's job harder beyond Firefox:
- Noscript
- Privacy Badger
- DNS ad blocking
- Don't log in to your google acct other than to pull mail. Sign out for general usage or a private window seems to isolate between signins.
- Have Firefox purge all cookies and cache on close. For extra fun, close the browse when logging out of gmail.

That tells us that uBlock is working quite well.๐Ÿ‘

Google is a virus... ๐Ÿ’ฉ

@selzero @schmidt There is something else Google should worry about. In almost all of Europe (ie Council of Europe areas rather than just European Union areas) Have article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights which is the right to privacy. Google could face an UNLIMITED fine if it breaches that. Council of Europe includes countries such as Iceland, Norway, Switzerland and the UK who are outside the EU.
