abandonware ought to be public domain

if your company made it and decided its no longer going to support it, the commons at least deserves a chance

fixes forced obselesence very effectively

@stellarskylark absolutely, all of it, not just the source code: designs, repair documents, operational guidelines

unless you're actively contributing to ensuring people using your (obsolete) products can continue to do so, all this information ought to be in public domain

@aynish This but also for movies that are dumped for tax writeoffs.

Zazlav the Destroyer must be stopped!

@hank heck yeahs, some others I think should be included as abandonware:

games that can't be played anymore
movies not available for distribution
books / magazines no longer being sold
both industrial machinery and personal devices that are go out of support windows

fungalinflection

@aynish I know this will never happen, I’m not a developer. Would a library of Congress type entity where companies had to deposit their code etc, and it would be made public if/when they failed be feasible?

अनीश

@fungalinflectio yes, it would have to be some sort of library/archive but we don't have to stop at software
and these institutions need funding

@aynish Agree about this so much. There are arguments that copyrights would make the original creator plenty of money for their effort and still encourage them to create if the copyright window was 25 to even 12 years. Once a corporation gets their hands on literally any intellectual creative property they enshittify it and stop anyone from doing anything good with it. Code used to be all open source til fucking Gates made a fortune taking the commons and patented it, which use created using tax payer funded computer time.

@aynish if lawmakers weren't idiots when i came to tech then
Peter H. Fröhlich

@aynish Including firmware for old synths! But they are SO afraid that we would keep improving their 30+ year-old stuff that they'd sell one or two units less now. Sad.

@aynish I've been thinking that about tv/streaming series that get cancelled mid-plot too
