I genuinely feel like #Protomaps is not nearly getting the attention it deserves

protomaps.com

We can drop a single file on a static host and get stylable vector maps? Magic ✨

In combination with Maplibre it's a game changer for 99% of web map use cases 👏

Where's the moat in web maps nowadays?

3d? Proprietary data?

2d maps with OpenStreetMap data seem Good Enough ™️ for what most folks need, and those use cases are definitely covered by Maplibre + Protomaps 🤌✨

(I'm specifically not talking about services like geocoding, navigation, etc. here but only basemaps)

@djh the moat is legal. Try putting those nice google geocoding results on a non-google map. 😐

@djh Oh wow. You may have probably completely changed the way I’m gonna tackle a freelance project I was about to start tomorrow, which would’ve started with “let’s set up an OSM tileserver”. 🤯

@thibaultmol @djh Yeah, I've seen the project before; it _is_ interesting and might be worth it to experiment with. One drawback is that it is still somewhat experimental and a one-man-project (but then again, MapComplete has a single point of failure there too ;) )

At the same time, the maptiler bill bounced and is getting more expensive... It crossed the half-a-million 'view requests' past month...

@djh that's awesome. I might try that out for one project of mine.

Would this work for tilesets which only cover parts of the globe, e.g. custom overlay as tiles?

Daniel

@guerda sure! There's a

pmtiles convert

tool to turn a .mbtiles file into a .pmtiles file and recent gdal by now can write .pmtiles directly, too!

Then on the maplibre side you just point it to the .pmtiles static file url and be done with it 😍

Daniel

@guerda recent tippecanoe versions can directly write .pmtiles, too, nowadays! So awesome! 🚀🌔

Xerz! :blobcathearttrans:

@djh curious, I wanted to implement myself something exactly like this… good to know it’s already been proven feasible

@djh 💯 When I read the idea for the pmtiles format i thought it was so obvious, and simple and yet no-one had every thought of doing that.

I've been *very* happy with pmtiles (via tippecanoe) for my river map amandasaurus.github.io/osm-riv

@amapanda @djh @bdon It takes some audacity and tenacity to stick with a new file format and all it implies. PMT is such an improvement on MBT just because it gets SQLite (and its preference for local files) out of the picture.

Which reminds me (using the opportunity to ask smart people...) - is there some way to have a list of entries (perhaps with images attached) in a somewhat structured, but easily editable format, while being able to display entries on a map (filtering/styling by categories/tags) and get a GPX of them?

Indeed, considered uMap, but collating detail from Github issues would be great, as it would allow for easier collaboration and tracking.

Ilya Zverev

@djh Absolutely. People just don't know about it. I plan to write an article on geo in cloud, but first I have to leave my job :)
