@mbonsma Disctracted pedestrians are also a danger for other traffic participants such as other pedestrians, cyclists, skaters etc. Those people also expect you to be aware of your environment, and if you don't you risk both your and their health.
Claiming that is your right to be distracted while you are in a public space where other people also want to use the streets and sidewalks is disrespectful towards them and their wishes.

Distracted pedestrians are a myth, definitionally.

Drivers can be distracted because what they are doing requires significant focus. The same distraction applying to pedestrians is meaningless, because they are moving much more slowly, and so don't need to react as fast.

It's simple physics. If I look down at my phone for six seconds while travelling 70km/h I cross a city block....can I see that far ahead? No. If I look at my phone for six seconds while walking, I move about 15 feet...I can see 15 feet ahead.
