CONGRESSMAN JAMIE RASKIN, who is Jewish and one of the prosecutors of Trump's first impeachment, has written the closest any American politician will come to saying FU to both Netanyahu & Hamas

raskin.house.gov/2023/10/state

THIS πŸ‘‡πŸΎ
"Contempt for civilian life is the hallmark of terrorist regimes and actors, not liberal democracies. Unlike the terrorists, we reject all notions of mass guilt, collective punishment and deliberate sacrifice of civilian life for military or ideological purposes."

The Laws of War Governing Conduct of the Israeli Response and the Safety of Palestinians

A just war undertaken in self-defense must be prosecuted justly, according to international and humanitarian law, the central purpose of which is the protection of civilian life from military violence. The more than two million Palestinians essentially trapped in miserable and vulnerable conditions in the densely packed Gaza Strip, nearly half of them children, have a right to be kept safe from the terrorist violence of Hamas and from the Israeli military campaign launched in response to it. The Palestinian people are not responsible for the criminal actions of Hamas terrorists, but there have already been more than 2,200 lives lost in Gaza in this first week of aerial attacks, and Israel’s anticipated ground invasion has not even begun.

Under international law, innocent civilians may never be targeted in a military campaign, as President Biden has emphasized in recent days, and state armies and militaries must take great precautions to keep civilians safe during the course of battle. This general principle is difficult but absolutely required by international humanitarian law. [...]

The defense of innocent civilians on all sides is not an obstructive legal doctrine or battlefield annoyance but the entire purpose of a just war against an enemy that has set itself against humanity. Contempt for civilian life is the hallmark of terrorist regimes and actors, not liberal democracies. [...]

Hopefully, there will be more voices like this.

Unfortunately, the US approach seems to be: Send bombs first, ask questions later.

@donray @blogdiva Look up how Blinken has been spending his week. (Not uncritically shovelling arms to Israel.)

Don Ray

@Nazani @blogdiva

I’m not sure what you’re getting at.

Blinken today: β€œWe are now very actively engaged… to make sure, to the best of our ability, that people can get out of harm’s way and that the assistance they need – the food, water, medicine – can get in.”

It sounds very weak considering that the weapons are really already there and since Israel has already caused mass evacuations, water shortages, the collapse of medical services, etc.

@blogdiva nice words, yet still the US stands in full support and is sending a second aircraft carrier. what are Raskin et al *doing* to reign in Israel?

@Colby do you know what is going in the House of Representative as i type this?

his letter, at the very least, sets the tone for all who are against Netanyahu but are afraid to speak up.

DELETED

@blogdiva I’m aware. I want Raskin to use his pen to do more than jot down obvious statements like β€œeveryone should follow international law”. Israel isn’t following international law. I want Raskin to explain how he thinks we should reign in Israel. I want him to act like an elected leader, not just write nice things.

@Colby so you're saying you do not know how USA House of Representatives work. it's OK to not know how he can't do what you think he can. but if you DO NOT HAVE THE HUMILITY TO ACKNOWLEDGE YOUR IGNORANCE i will not waste my time explaining in earnest why what you're asking from him is not possible.

DELETED

@blogdiva I said he could write about what he thinks the US should *do*. Explain to me why he’s forbidden from doing that. And keep in mind people are dying tonight while he settles for writing nice words.

Paul Wermer

@blogdiva Congressman Raskin continues to impress me.

@blogdiva Thank you for sharing. Thank you, Congressman, for articulating very important ideas.

And thank you for the #ALTtext. Not only does ALT help the blind and visually impaired, it also helps sighted users like me read the text.

Ingo Wichmann

@blogdiva naive question by someone who does not understand the discurse in US: would a Republican see the word "liberal" here as a positive value?

Mike. he/him. πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦

@ingo_wichmann @blogdiva they got other things on their mind, like either seeing Isreal as the dawn of the 2nd coming, or front line soldiers in their own holy-race wars

@blogdivmastodon.social great read and I'm a big fan of him. He's professional enough to keep his manners (which is why I would never survive) and respected enough to be listened to. I hope this is only the very first step though. Bibi needs to go (4/5 Isrealis blame him for this) and peace needs to be forced on them...no more of this politely asking them to behave

Flyy

You may need to check your history. Liberal democracies conducted mass bombings of civilians in WW2.

@blogdiva

In all seriousness, I wonder that the expected outcome of voting in Hamas as the government was.
