I posted this on the deadbird site:

"Standing offer for journalists: I'll help you get set up on Mastodon and will help you bring your Twitter audience along (and find new followers and rich engagement there). All I ask is that you migrate -- over time, not instantly -- your social media activity there."

@dangillmor I have to spell it out as M@$tod0n because its a free speech platform. At least posts were getting hidden or or removed for a while there for using the word.
jz.tusk

@dangillmor

👏👏👏 That's the way to do it!

And if you introduce them on your feed, I will follow them, and will toot them out to my dozens (dozens, I say!) of followers.

And here's a tag for people to follow, to not miss any of them:

#MastodonMediaMigration

astroPug

@jztusk @dangillmor

Hey, I’ll boost them and likely follow quite a bunch as well. I’m just a member of the peanut gallery but I’ll do my part lol

SearingTruth

@dangillmor

"It is those who follow that award power to those who lead."
SearingTruth

Shree Gupta

@dangillmor yeah like anyone gonna stop Elon Musk to buy mastodon

RoBo

@shreegupta @dangillmor he can buy one server or setup his own server but he cannot control the fediverse. No one person can

jjlinux | X unverified 😅

@shreegupta @dangillmor are you aware of the challenge that would present for Musk?
1.- Most Mastodon server owners seriously dislike him
2.- Based solely on this, those owners would aim for ridiculously high selling prices
3.- there are thousands of Mastodon servers. He would miss quite a few anyways
Bottom line is that nobody can "purchase" Mastodon, not even Musk.

Becky

@shreegupta @dangillmor How exactly would someone buy a protocol? Who would they even pay?

😷💉RoyalTea👑🫖

@dangillmor

Please do the same with scientists and medical specialists.

Petra van Cronenburg

@theteapixie Here's a small list of at least of the #scienceWriters truesciphi.org/psw_mas.html
Try also the hashtags #Scientists #STEM #fediScience #ScienceMastodon #academia and the hashtags for the different disciplines to discover people. Mastodon has several instances for science only and Mastodon's new search also works well now. @dangillmor

TAI

@dangillmor I absolutely hate the beggars approach, better to step up your game, keep improving and attract them. EARN IT, there is a lot of room for improvement

Exiled New Yorker - Connie

@TAI @dangillmor

We’ve made improvements.
@Gargron has listened and changed things up a bit.

I’ll settle for begging.

I have no pride.

I’m quite humble, actually.

TAI

@Pagan_Animist @dangillmor @Gargron don't do that, you are making strides and self respect and pride will have everything to do with that. Focus on creating what you will be proud of and the rest will come naturally, they will be begging you

TAI

@Pagan_Animist @dangillmor @Gargron I know, but it was an opportunity to make a general statement about it all

DELETED

@dangillmor
Let me know if I can help. I've been posting encouragement to come here too, but I imagine you know a lot more people than I do.

I did a clever on the bird site:

Make X your ex.

Mastodon Migration

@dangillmor

Hopefully given the total insanity on Twitter in the wake of the crisis in Israel, some journalists will take you up on your offer.

If they do, this account will join you in helping to promote any journalists who begin to engage here.

For the future of a free press, let's build open social media.

Jessica Mae Stover

@dangillmor lol help me I left immediately when the acquisition rolled over and lost my entire audience which I had brought over from the blogosphere when I left a media conglom

wouldn’t have done otherwise and knew that’s how it would go because it’s not my first migration, but it do be hard out here

I was @JSto there — so long-time/early publishing there

Dan Gillmor

@JSto I have half the followers here that I had there, but at least 10x the genuine engagement here.

That said, I've disappeared from a scene where I had some prominence -- but a loss of followers and (if I had any) mind-share is well worth it.

Deborah Hartmann Preuss, pcc 🇨🇦

@JSto @dangillmor
JSto, there used to be services to find your twitter followers who have mastodon accounts in their profiles, if that still works (last I heard, it did). The one I used created a list I could import here to connect to them.

Also, maybe one of these tips can help?
mstdn.ca/@deborahh/11086578549

Wishing you the best 🤞

Jon

@JSto @dangillmor Looking at your profile, I would suggest following about 1000 accounts. Poke around on different instances and follow people that look interesting so you build a spiderweb across the fediverse. Many of those people will follow back, especially if you engage in conversations.

Petra van Cronenburg

@dangillmor Anyone who answered? Perhaps they should know that other media already have their own instances here, like e.g. @BBC_News_Labs or @ZDF ?

Matthias Bohlen

@dangillmor How would you do this: “bring your Twitter audience along”?

Rob

@admin @dangillmor

I had the same question. I have to constantly swap between each site, and I would much rather not do that.

In the other place I have spent years curating very rich themed lists of clever people. I've started to do the same here, but it's just harder to find them.

mastodon.green/lists/1179
(My journalism list for example)

Matthias Bohlen

@robf @dangillmor I get a "page not found" error when I click on the link.

Rob

@admin

Urgh :-( @JohanEmpa how do I link to my lists? Are they not public?

CautionWIP🏳️‍🌈🇨🇦🕎

@robf @admin @JohanEmpa You can, however, export them as csv files, share the file somewhere you like, and others can then import them and upload.

Also, check out mastodonlistmanager.org/main. Great list management tool.

Tom Schaffer

@dangillmor How do you go about doing the "bring the audience along" part?

Petra van Cronenburg

@schaffertom You can use an app: fedifinder.glitch.me/ (we have several apps). It works as long as it can use Twitter's API again. @dangillmor

Tom Schaffer

@NatureMC @dangillmor I know the tool. But this brings along the people you're following, not your audience.

Petra van Cronenburg

@schaffertom Long ago, when the API was still fully working for third parties, I could import the people who followed me. But I don't remember any more which app it was, I left Tw long ago. @dangillmor

Jeff Gibbard :verified:

@dangillmor it’s sad that so many of them will likely wind up on Threads instead.

DELETED

@dangillmor there's a flaw. There is no monetization here on this platform.

Lorq Von Ray

@dangillmor I would expect this message to have almost zero reach on the zombie Nazi site, by design, without consequence, and with complete disregard for how you feel about that.

DELETED

@dangillmor How many takers have you had Dan? I feel like you're wasting your time, but I'd like you to prove me wrong. It feels like if Twitter were run by the actual third Reich they would still manage some mental contortions to stay on there.

Roundcat

@dangillmor please post the collection of excuses here. Maybe I’ll make bingo cards.

skua

@dangillmor
Would be happy to trial follow any journos who take up your offer.

Dianora

@dangillmor They are losing audience. I am no longer on twittler. Maybe they only want alt-right and fascist audiences.

Truth Or Consequences ✅

@dangillmor
Those who migrate first will have the easiest path to regain their audience.

Clive Thompson

@dangillmor

Tell any of em if they want to hear from other writers what it’s been like they can ping me or email me at clive@clivethompson.net — I’ve been 95% mastodon / 5% bird site for a year now (after years of the inverted ratio)

Leonie :vf: :kopimi:

@clive @dangillmor the thing is that engagement is indeed richer on Mastodon, especially organic engagement, multiple studies found. It's not about why anymore, it's just the when.

James Gleick

@clive @dangillmor Count me in, too. Happy to help anyone who needs it. Frustrated by the smart and well-meaning people who can’t seem to make the move.

Dan Gillmor

@JamesGleick @clive might be worth collecting people like us in a more organized way...

Randy (Bluesbreaker)

@dangillmor Excellent, I've been talking about making sure that those of us who know how to set up and maximise the Mastodon experience offer to help anyone serious about posting (as opposed to 100% for entertainment).
One thing I am convinced would be a big help are CSV to import by field of interest. There are many all spread out, but a repertoire would be helpful.

Randy (Bluesbreaker)

@dangillmor There are pages of individual accounts , but importing them one by one is not an ideal use of time.

leemeade

@dangillmor
Amen. By now, they have to realize the doom loop Twitter has been reduced to by #MuskRat

@pineywoozle

@dangillmor We will all help. The sooner #Twitter dies the better it will be for the universe.

Patty A. Gray

@dangillmor

I honestly don’t understand why any person or entity of any integrity is still on #Twitter. I can only explain it as a kind of persistence of motion, easier to roll along than to exert energy to disrupt that motion and change direction.

Anytime I visit a website and see “Follow us on” with a bird logo, I lose respect for that person or company. I think I’ll start letting them know: “I want to patronize you, but I find it difficult to trust you given your social media policy.”

Eric R. Danton

@dangillmor I’ve migrated 99 percent of my activity to here and to Bluesky, but I’d love help bringing followers along

Cleo of Topless Topics

@dangillmor Good luck. I've pretty much given up on prying anyone off twitter who hasn't left it already (or even started posting to any non-tech-bro-owned platform). Maybe if we offer them sponsorships and ad deals? (that seems to be the main motivation for a lot of them refusing to budge)

(I'm being sarcastic about the sponsorships)

taketwo

@dangillmor
Make sure to offer it on Blusky as well, it is the currently most hyped x alternative

Artemesia

@dangillmor I wonder whether their employment contracts (or engagement if freelance) require them to maintain a deadbird presence and to promote their work product there. Clues usually arrive last at manglement levels.

Brooklyn Buckets

@dangillmor I keep posting a willingness on TwiX to help people move to Mastodon (or invite them to Bluesky), and I haven’t gotten a single taker either.

It’s demoralizing, honestly. People don’t seem to care about the toxic atmosphere at TwiX. Either that or they like it.

Meanwhile, I can’t get ANY traction of note with my Mastodon accounts. Engagement is slow-growing at Bluesky but it dwarfs the engagement I get at Mastodon or PixelFed (very few followers and almost no replies/discussion)😞

Beth

@BrooklynBuckets @dangillmor

Jump into conversations. That is how I just found you. I'm not a huge sports fan myself, but I boost sports so that people can find their people.

Also have a pinned post on my page with people hashtagging their favorite teams.

Brooklyn Buckets

@Hey_Beth @dangillmor Thanks. I’ll keep trying. My discovery skills haven’t been so great on here, yet, I’ll admit.

AI6YR

@BrooklynBuckets @Hey_Beth @dangillmor Have you posted and pinned an Intro? That's really helpful to those of us who discover accounts like yours, we can boost your intro and hopefully a bunch of #NBA and #basketball fans show up. Also, hashtag readily. #Brooklyn #sports #WNBA #NewYorkLiberty #NYC #BrooklynNets all help!

Brooklyn Buckets

@ai6yr @Hey_Beth @dangillmor I try to hashtag in most of my posts, but I should really post intros on my accounts and include one for which teams I follow (beyond the main two the account is built around). My sports interests are pretty broad.

I guess I never posted an intro beyond my bio at TwiX so I wasn’t sure what the difference between the two would be here either (other than @Hey_Beth ‘s suggestion I list the many teams I root for). Thanks everyone.

AI6YR

@BrooklynBuckets @Hey_Beth @dangillmor For sure... and it does take some folks boosting for people to see your account, etc. (which is hard to do starting with only a few followers, of course!). That's why the hashtags are useful. Also set your account to be indexed/shown in searches (new feature in Mastodon v4.2.0).

Beth

@dangillmor

Oliver Darcy started a thread on Threads two days ago. It seems to be pulling many of the journalists over from Twitter. I'm not journalists that have clung to the dead bird are open to building out on two different platforms. If they could fathom that, they would have left long ago.

Leisureguy

@dangillmor Perhaps they think that things are getting better.

Mr H D

@Leisureguy @dangillmor That made me laugh "Perhaps they think that things are getting better."

Mr H D

@Leisureguy @dangillmor Being short on time to learn new things might be a factor. Getting intimate with all the settings will take time. I have set up dedicated Firefox profile for mastodon and I have a bookmark folder for mastodon users with sub folders with profiles and this means I can customize my reading experience using a system I am familiar with. I reduce mouse clicking whenever i can and I recommend the Vimium plugin for super-fast browser use. @Leisureguy goes in the "incoming folder"

Hiker Geek 🌲💻🌲

@dangillmor

First although you know you posted it, is anyone actually seeing it? I wouldn't put it past X to filter individual tweets that mention Mastodon and migrate.

Next X is taking heat for the misinformation surrounding the Israel attack.

Is the information on Mastodon better and why?

rouxdoo

@dangillmor

I'm sure you know your friends better than I but I have followed you for a short bit here on masto and I can confidently say that you are truly polarized on your twit/masto opinions...that might have an impact on your audience's reception of the message.

You catch more flies with honey is a universal truth. Lure them don't berate them for their current pattern perhaps?

I love that you are here and want your ilk to come too because it is where I want to engage with others. Thanks.

LA Legault ✌🏻

@dangillmor

It’s not going to happen. Journalists subjects are on twitter (governments, companies, etc).

Mastodon doesn’t have the #s or the interface or onboarding, and I have spoken to many at length.
