People need to understand: Both X and Meta are trying to be an all-in-one social app similar to WeChat in China. Monopolies are dangerous and we are already seeing information-restricting moves like X removing headlines and Threads prohibiting searches on public health words like Covid and vaccines.

@luckytran for what I've heard about WeChat, im.suprised it hasn't become a stand alone OS

@luckytran Twitter/X currently has 396.5 million users... Users. That's what Big Tech calls human beings, users. They see us as nothing more than addicts obsessed with their exploitative platforms.

But how do you save that many people when they themselves don't want to be saved? It's not as though anyone’s forcing them to be there.

@adrianmorales@ieji.de @luckytran@med-mastodon.com People on Twitter complained that others were discussing moving off-platform, and Twitter started blocking mentions of it. Those who remain have already stated they want to be stuck there, to never know anything else. They are already lost. We can't save them.

@adrianmorales @luckytran I agree that it's bad. But what else fits more than users? Because that number of people really are addicted.

As for your last statement. My guess is to be more logical. And to display that being more logical in as many places as possible and as much as possible. Then again. That's kind of my answer for everything. :P

@luckytran Fortunately, they are unlikely to pull this off without government support.

@luckytran They can't be the everything app if they keep suspending people for not being politically correct. Eventually people like myself get tired of it and stop fucking with them.

Carolyn

@ArtBDT @luckytran LOL. These days they are suspending folk for being "woke" or speaking contrary to their leader.

@CStamp @luckytran My only hope is that Mastodon doesn't become this way. I've already had a post removed that wasn't politically correct. They said I was homophobic even though I'm a gay man. All of these platforms are ridiculous. It's always been that way since MySpace.

Carolyn

@ArtBDT @luckytran Politically correct often means with awareness of others. If it was removed, it might be worth thinking if it could've been expressed better.

@ArtBDT @CStamp @luckytran Here's a random thought. If a carpenter uses a hammer to nail a nail into something he shouldn't have nailed a nail into. It isn't the hammer's fault.

Social media sites are ridiculous. One way or another. But there are hardcore in your face reasons for it. The rulebook by which we do things and the rulers of said social media sites set the tone in part for how those social media sites will play out.

And further. American culture does.

@luckytran Don't forget to add that Meta has already, on Facebook and Instagram, both their platforms besides Threads, completely restricted Canadians from sharing any news content whatsoever... #cdnpoli #meta

Abazigal

@luckytran It’s not a monopoly if people willing choose to be on the platform.

@luckytran

I assume BlueSky is trying too. The AT protocol (used instead of Activity Pub) is a hint.

@luckytran Elon keeps saying he wants X to be an all-in-one social app, but he's been doing everything possible to push people away from it short of taking the site down entirely. Imposing limits on DMs and the number of posts and comments users can read is not going to make most people want to use X for everything. And he wonders why advertisers are losing interest.

@luckytran People especially need to understand it because neither company/CEO made any kind of secret of it.

When they tell you who they are, believe them.
