So numerous brands are giving up on Threads by Instagram, allegedly due to lack of engagement πŸ˜‚ BBC Gives Up On Threads (By Instagram), Sticks With Mastodon darnell.day/bbc-gives-up-on-th Instead of simply adding a link option to Instagram, Meta decided to create a new app that collects user data. This move by BBC tells you how good Mastodon is right now.

Threads is pretty dead when I log into it.

@nixCraft Thread was a stupid idea from the start, it didn't offer anything new, Twitter is still a much better option than thread.

@dave @nixCraft @BBCRD @BBC_News_Labs @BBC5Live @BBCRadio4 threads has no real features that allowed user engagement.

I welcome competition even as bad as it was with user data. It's healthy for the internet in general to have options.

That said. What a poorly thought out plan from the get go. Not allowing basic features like being able to look at hashtags or trending topics was such a waste.
Among other things. They aren't new to the space, they should have known better

@dave @nixCraft @BBCRD @BBC_News_Labs @BBC5Live @BBCRadio4 This highlights a big problem with mastodon, the terrible search results. Searching for "BBC News" or "BBCNews" only results in bot accounts that aren't affiliated with the bbc. Unless you already know the name of an account there's no easy way of finding it.

@geoffl
That's silly. Does it show up at all?
I can see it, but still buried way down.

If you can see it then this sounds like a good idea: github.com/mastodon/mastodon/d

@nixCraft @timrichards there’s so many people writing essays in their Instagram captions so people are clearly not adverse to text based Instagram run platforms. They could have easily done well with a great Twitter alternative but they failed

@joannaholman @nixCraft Having it be algorithm-only is the kiss of death IMO

DELETED

@nixCraft I'm not sure much can be drawn from this. DW News is the opposite, engagement on Threads and zero engagement on Mastodon.

> BBC prefers to control its social narrative

BBC prefers to control EVERY narrative. "How cool is that?" Not very; a little bit fascist, even. Be very very wary of them being in the Fediverse, please.

@nixCraft

Just another day in tech-bro failure. So glad they are in charge of leading humanity to its future.
