So apparently dang and the HN crowd are so upset I wrote some messages for HN visitors to our website, that they now banned my home IP address 🙃

Yes, seriously. I get 403s from any device on my home connection, and yet it works fine on 4G.

Just when you thought they couldn't get pettier. And no, I haven't been doing any scraping/scripting/anything sus.

@marcan cool, that's an admission that site owners have the right to exclude people of their choosing.

@marcan I had this randomly happen to me at one point on my home connection. Worked again a day later without changing anything, and my account itself was never banned 🤷‍♂️ and I'm a nobody

@Aissen I've already established that dang ignores my emails and I have no interest in begging for access. This is petty on the level of that time when spender/grsecurity banned my IP because I tweeted a DoS vuln in their code that they themselves classified as a class of vuln they don't care about.

@marcan do you mind someone else asking ? Worst case scenario, it might clear that "mistake" up.

eater

@marcan I think they should do this to everyone

@eater This right here. Finally a technical solution to a social problem that would actually work.

drakulix

@marcan I would say that is a new feature of your home connection. 👌️

"Zero-config HN block"

@marcan do you have dynamic DNS or some such that exposed your home IP to make it easy for them to discover it? Otherwise, this smells like an abuse of access to PII (in this case, log data that could associate you with your IP.).

Hector Martin

@mikemol My IPv6 is pseudo-static and my IPv4 is CGNAT (DS-Lite), but also effectively assigned a pseudo-static (non unique) outbound IP for each customer. They could easily catch my IP from account logs (my account is locked out but still logged in on my main browser, so they get pings from that every time I forget to open HN in an incognito window).

So not only did they ban me, they banned a chunk of users from my ISP along the way 🤦‍♂️

@marcan The funniest part about this is that the HN crowd usually is all about freeze peach. I guess that only applies until the speach is about them 😂

crab

@marcan where can i apply to have my ip blocked?

Hector Martin

Reminder that this is the same HN that previously added rel=noreferer to outbound links specifically to asahilinux.org after we started redirecting away their traffic.

Kevin Karhan :verified:

@marcan I guess you can filter them by that marker...

Yaksh Bariya

@marcan why did you start redirecting away traffic from HN in first place? Ive read that the site has a lot of issues but probably redirecting away traffic is not the way

Erin

@marcan congratulations! :party_parrot:

@marcan having to deal with them seems like it's a really huge pain :blobcatsweats:

@marcan I also ran into something like this over the weekend, though tbf I *was* doing research to dig up dirt on HN
