@chad Just wondering what does indexing ones profile mean / involve?

The setting can be found under ‘Settings’—>’Public profile’—>’Privacy and reach’—>’Include public posts in search results’ Checking the box means you are consenting to have your posts indexed for searchability. @Crispius Ahh thanks for the explanation! I can understand why it's helpful, but glad that kind of thing is off by default so people don't end up with that feature on inadvertently. As a content creator / photojournalist, that can be helpful for me, so thanks again for explaining what it is for me! |
@Howard
Indexing (aka universal search) is a new feature implemented in Mastodon as of version 4.2. This feature has been controversial because the ability for folks to search through posts has, on other social media sites, historically been a vector for trolling and harassment.
On the flip side, many folks migrating from the other site (esp. journalists) have been asking for this feature.
As a consequence, indexing of users posts is disabled by default.
