@chad @chad Finally got around to it. Thanks for the screenshot Indexing (aka universal search) is a new feature implemented in Mastodon as of version 4.2. This feature has been controversial because the ability for folks to search through posts has, on other social media sites, historically been a vector for trolling and harassment. On the flip side, many folks migrating from the other site (esp. journalists) have been asking for this feature. As a consequence, indexing of users posts is disabled by default. The setting can be found under βSettingsββ>βPublic profileββ>βPrivacy and reachββ>βInclude public posts in search resultsβ Checking the box means you are consenting to have your posts indexed for searchability. @Crispius Ahh thanks for the explanation! I can understand why it's helpful, but glad that kind of thing is off by default so people don't end up with that feature on inadvertently. As a content creator / photojournalist, that can be helpful for me, so thanks again for explaining what it is for me! @chad I am now, as of today, I will put it down to a delayed reaction due to a senior moment. Thank you for saying that @Daveography Even as a joke it has some truth to it: I do feel that opting-in to indexing is "expected". (Not an expectation set by posts on this instance @chad - yet?! π ) @chad some troll found a toot of mine and threatened to bash both my and my kidβs head in with a rock so no @chad BTW, Indexing your profile == giving permission to train AI models on your online activity, whether you intend or want that. |
@chad
