@alex @uastronomer I love to wind my fellow born&bred Americans up when they say things like “I'm Irish” or “I'm German” (or Ukranian, or Argentinian -- all 4 examples of which I have close-ish friends who have said that). I then say “No, you're American. You were born here, right? You parents were likely born here, right? Possibly even your grandparents. You're American, not xxxxxx!”. Most of them can't even speak the language of the nationality they claim to ‘be’.

@leoncowle @alex @uastronomer I’m sure your friends are aware they’re American. Surely there’s no harm in them being proud of their ancestry?

@TisTree @alex @uastronomer “wind them up”. I.e. in a joking way. It’s received in that way, too. 😉

@leoncowle @alex @uastronomer I remember one university student in Cologne in the late 1990s. He had a German surname, and he spoke fluent German (although with a strong American accent), but he was 100% U.S.American, and despite speaking German, he didn't understand very much about contemporary German culture.
