There's a lot going around right now with white queer people countering criticism of racist behaviour by calling the criticism "anti-queer".

Here's one reason why this doesn't hold up:

1. All white people are racist by default, yes including the queer ones, and if you have an issue with that statement, go google it and educate yourself. Then return here.

2. The Fediverse is predominantly white. (This is obvious to see)

3. The Fediverse has, compared to the general population, a much higher percentage of queer people. (That's great, good for us. Yay!) And we often are the ones running instances and moderating them, this receiving more scrutiny.

Those things together mean, simply through statistics, that a lot of the callouts of racist behaviour are going to be towards white queer people as well. Because we are more strongly represented here than many other spaces, our queerness does not prevent us from doing racist shit and it doesn't exempt us from getting that called out.

This is not an anti-queer conspiracy. It's just boring old whiteness receiving the deserved response and even more boring statistics with the Fediverse being largely run by queer nerds (of which again most are white and have learning to do, including myself).

None of this is an excuse to hide behind your queerness or even weaponising it when confronted with your own racism. I know that confrontation is uncomfortable and can really scratch your self-image as "one of the good ones". But it's necessary.

@esther I was taught the very ugly lesson that ethnicity seems to trump everything else when it comes to ethnic and religious discrimination. I mention “religious discrimination” because #Muslims are almost always perceived as being exclusively POC, and much of the #islamophobia that we Muslims face is rooted in #racism.

@esther I’ve suffered from more islamophobia & discrimination on Fedi at the hands of LGBTQ+ than I did on Twitter. I guess power corrupts. Over there, we were all equally targeted & powerless, so there was more banding together. Here, I’ve been chased off servers by folks I used to think would be an ally. It has been a very painful awakening. Minorities should stick together.

They shouldn’t be letting their whiteness dictate how they treat ethnic and religious minorities.

@esther This is all perfectly true but, at the same time, many people are still bigoted against queer folk (particularly trans women) and some of those people will occasionally be BIPOC who are at the same time subject to their own experiences of societal discrimination.

The most recent major discourse about this has arisen from the bad space lists, and in that case, the original complaints were that certain trans instances were listed on the bad space list incorrectly, and that this was an example of systemic transmisogyny. Saying so is not an inherently racist action, even if some of the people involved in running the bad space are Black.

@talopine @esther two wrongs never make a right. Don’t try to rationalise bigotry in any form. Just because a member of such and such group can be a mean or nasty individual, it doesn’t make it okay to disparage and harass their entire community as retaliation.

@InayaShujaat @esther I'm sure someone has done it, because yep white people on the internet are pretty damn racist, but all the critical comments I've seen about the bad space have been in good faith and have been about the systems, not the race of the people involved. There are real concerns with how the system works, and when they've been raised, they've just been dismissed as people attacking Ro personally.

@esther

Just because one belongs to an oppressed minority, that doesn't mean them can't belong to _another_ oppressing majority.
