an important skill to have as you get older is the ability to be taught something from someone younger than you

@sugar there are many areas where this happens for me (bless) but as long as video games keep happening this will simply always apply to me :blobcatinnocent:

mixed berry social anxiety disorder 🍓

@wenotfreeyet @sugar yeah i extremely ask for advice from the teenagers who kick my ass at the melee local haha

@sugar@goblin.camp as you get even older, you end up relying on it – anyone my age is unlikely to know much of use in an applicable configuration for the modern world and even if they do, they completely doubt that they even know anything at all any more

@sugar Hell, I even look forward to the fresh perspective. Younger people have a social web that older people lose sometimes and that plays in too, for not wasting time with outdated ideas.

@sugar 💯 percent agree! The children shall teach us. My two younguns have always been my greatest teachers. And hiring smart, brilliant, talented 20-somethings was always my hiring model.

@sugar Sometimes the very young do not always listen.

However, sometimes the very old, forget they too still can have much to learn.

@sugar My go-to phase is, “Can you teach me about [e.g., Mastodon]? I’m an Old.” Younger folks have often been very generous with their time and patience.

David Quintero

@sugar Michael Nielsen said something like that: he had observed that the scientists that were creative until old age were those open to learn from the young, too.

@Archergal @sugar Yup! I always say if I stop learning, stick a fork in me and learning also encompasses learning from younger people and, well, just being open.

@madgeface @sugar Strong agree! Sometimes it’s tricky because you THINK you’ve known something FOREVER, but it’s important to remember that stuff CHANGES, and younger folks may know better than you.
I just try to be humble-ish.

@sugar ngl, that one is also quite possibly the hardest of all.

@sugar Told my new co-op student today I hope it's a learning experience for him, but I also hope to learn some fresh skills from him. I tell this to all my students. I always learn something from them, one way or another.

How do we feel about being _governed_ by someone younger than us? That's creeping up on me. If I was French it would have happened already. (If I was American it probably won't happen for a while.)

@sugar It’s easy to say that. But wait until the sweet 16yo working it with her Dad is now a mature 24yo running your CrossFit box. It’s bloody disorienting I tell you!

(But it is also marvelous.)

@sugar this seems a weirdly specific thing to do?
I don't see how someone will start asking people their age to check if they can learn from them or not.
You open yourself to learn from anyone or you don't, don't you think?

@sugar my millennial son will tell you it's a burden to be the tech guy for his Boomer Mom 😉

@sugar
Just as important as the ability to learn from the old. 😀
