Too many sites are now crammed with adverts like this itโs revolting. This one is PC Gamer. This is why people use adblockers when it just takes the piss.

@gamingonlinux I see some free space that maybe they could put some affiliate links to crypto scams in.

@gamingonlinux ublock origin is a spectrum blocker, you can block more than ads. You can even block annoying popups that tell you to disable your adblocker. @gamingonlinux I just CAN'T browse internet without an adblocker. May brain just melts otherwise. @gamingonlinux Seriously. I wouldn't *need* to block ads if they were less obtrusive. 1 banner ad on screen at a time. @gamingonlinux Immediately had this scene in mind. It really fits. #meme @gamingonlinux trust me we don't like it either. Sick of complaining about it. Absolutely no issues with people using an ad blocker, I couldn't do my job without it. @gamingonlinux I continue to be happy that FF mobile (at least on Android) supports extension and uBlock is one of the offered ones I use Better Open With. Make it the default "browser", and it lets you choose where to open search results. Doesn't work with the News app, which is kind of annoying. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.aboutmycode.betteropenwith&hl=en_US&gl=US Indonesia news portal(s) is even worse, on mobile the website automatically scroll up just to show an adโฆ @gamingonlinux it's a complete dumpster fire. It's as if the publishers are forcing you to use their mobile app so they can acquire more of your data.... @killyourfm @gamingonlinux are the mobile apps actually any better? I nope out of such publications instead of doing so much more work to try to get at whatever content they clearly don't value either. @Tekchip @gamingonlinux I don't honestly know if they're an improvement, but I want to believe they are. (NY Times app is the ONLY newsy app I use, but that's because I subscribe; totally worth the $3/month) But I still prefer RSS for consuming web content. That's getting more and more challenging. @gamingonlinux @killyourfm @gamingonlinux unlock and ghostery pretty much the first thing I do on a new install these days @gamingonlinux ublock origin on my desktop now reports it just crossed having blocked over 6 MILLION ads on my desktop since last year. I rarely see what the internet looks like without plugins/adblockers anymore because every tiny glimpse I've had reminds me of just how terrible it is. (I also override CSS to make every site use colors I choose) @raptor85 @gamingonlinux I recently reinstalled Firefox on my phone, and even just running without "block all audio AND video from auto playing" was kinda making me motion sick trying to read an article. The internet without adblockers is like trying to read the news underneath a swimmy oil slick, it's awful. @glassbottommeg @gamingonlinux Always forget too just how bad stuff like youtube is now as well, and I can't even WATCH twitch anymore, haven't in like a year or two because of how insane they went with ads and they inject them to the video stream so you can't really filter. I don't mind doing patreon or the like to support creators but i'm not spending half of my leisure time watching ads that CONSTANTLY interrupt the flow of whatever I'm reading/watching, effectively ruining the mood of it. @gamingonlinux And they always tell you when you arrive, "PlEaSe CoNiSiDeR dIsaBlInG yOuR aD bLoCkeR" Please consider making your site useable without an ad blocker! @gamingonlinux Agree, not to mention that ads are just as dangreous as downloading software frkm sketchy sites. @gamingonlinux@mastodon.social When I was setting up a new laptop recently I accidentally went to some of my favorite hobby sites before installing an adblocker. They were nearly unusable. Sad state of affairs. @gamingonlinux with the added ' We value your privacy' cookie pop-up. If you valued my privacy, you wouldn't need the popup - or for the EU to force you to provide a page. I now just navigate away from any page that doesn't have a 'reject all' button. I see way less ads as a result! Pages don't just want to serve you ads, they want targeted (read: stolen data based) ads. @gamingonlinux 20 years later we're somehow back to that hell hole. @gamingonlinux I don't like it, but I watch enough YouTube creators, that at present, it's not something I'm willing to just stop using. @sfalken @gamingonlinux At least as a Premium watcher, content creators get slightly more money from your views than they do with ads. So it's not all bad. @gamingonlinux @Conan_Kudo Yeah, it's why I'm not *that* upset about it, but it still feels fucking sleazy. I mean, the ads I was getting without the adblocker were some of the worst garbage, bullshit ads. Ads for things like apparently you can bang two spoons against you cheekbone to fix vision problems, because you know, hearing issues don't actually have anything to do with your eyes, perpetual motion scams, and OMG so much MAGA garbage. @gamingonlinux Trying to further exploit the consumers who aren't using adblock reduces the amount of consumers who aren't using adblock |
