"Absolutely rub my belly, this is totally not a trap."

Yep, this is why it works as a trap: Some felines actually like it.
(I find shoulder rubs are pretty safe. Also a lot of cats who are quite belly-sensitive will enjoy a chest rub.)

my general assumption with cats is that unless I know a cat really well, I don't play rough. So often they just don't seem to have a governor on their rough play - it can go from a game to evisceration of one's wrist in a flash.

@FeralRobots @isilzha314 @scalzi Oh yeah, you have to be careful! I find that some cats (like my Nibbler) are just general enjoyers of belly pets, whereas others (like The Lady Catherine) take a while to trust you enough to touch their underparts. And some are just so ticklish that they will always flay your hand if you are fresh enough to spring the belly trap.

@scalzi my cat tried that today.

I'll heal.

@scalzi see this is when I rub them between the shoulderblades. (Except for stepkid's cat who really does want you to rub her belly at this point.)

@scalzi Everyone knows that cats never lie. Rub the belly!

@scalzi I will fall for this trap every time.

Khitomer's Hamster

@scalzi that’s the trap that led to the antibiotics I’m on. Again.
