@JulianOliver would be cool to release a monthly snapshot to download locally on your machine. In case internet connectivity lacks.

prom™️

@JulianOliver @SolarDavy Wikipedia offline readers can probably do this. They might need minor changes to the download workflow, but the rest is already there.

Duncan

@JulianOliver nice idea. I assume that the wiki will be downloadable and available for offline viewing?

Julian Oliver

@scattershot Yes, very much the goal. Will also release ISO's for various embedded boards, OS and all, for offline dissemination.

Julian Oliver

@scattershot In the interim, the wiki needs to be written!

@kiwix
Offers a lot of downloadable wikis (some also overlapping with what this is trying to do, so maybe also a way to find points of collaboration). And it has an automated worker that you can file an issue with on github that will try to automatically package your wiki and make it available through the kiwix project/apps

Julian Oliver

@BillySmith Definitely! That needs to go in the wiki.

Billy Smith

@JulianOliver

Getting in touch with Vinay and Lucas would be a good idea.

They have done a lot of background work on this, so have a lot of information sources already. :D

Julian Oliver

@becha Less focused solely on sustainability solutions and howtos, rather also resilience strategies, community driven disaster planning and response, mindset, organisation and preparation, food and infrastructure fallbacks, etc. Great resource that one though!

AlexanderMars

@JulianOliver Collapsible Systems sounds like the refrain for a punk song!

@JulianOliver Will you have any engagement with folks off-server? I use disabled.social and since that's where the majority of my activism lies, I'll remain there. I don't have quite the spoons to maintain two accounts. I will mention a project my partner and I have been involved with, which is collecting hard copies of media and information for future use, if the internet is part of a collapse. Highly recc used media to build your collection. I found the Foxfire books once for only $40! :)

@JulianOliver Hi Julian, I just read about your project.
Could you tell more about it?

Eva Chanda

@JulianOliver
Very interesting and worthwhile project. My one quibble is with the pessimistic name—why not Resilient Systems?

Julian Oliver

@echanda Things that are collapsible, like tardigrades, are resilient :-)

@JulianOliver Check out Ben in Germany, who is experimenting with what a post climate-catastrophe community looks like. thebarracks.de/

and @simon_brooke in Scotland thinking about how we avoid catastrophic climate change and ecocide, and how we build a good society.

@JulianOliver can I contribute to the wiki without joining the server?

I distribute edible perennial native seeds for plants that are pest resistant and whose crop isn’t sensitive to freak weather. East Coast NA, zone 9-6.

I am also contributing to #ClimateChangeGardening to find and share solutions for home produce in the changing climate.

Julian Oliver

@jblue That sounds amazing. For now we really want to ground the project in community, with the wiki abiding to the rules of membership of the Mastodon instance. What you can do though is create an account, and then in an app like Tusky, 'Add Account', so as to be able to fluidly switch between your mastodon.world account, and that of collapsible.systems. Nothing lost, much gained :-)

Graham Spookyland🎃/Polynomial

@JulianOliver @jblue if you're ok with people joining the mastodon server and leaving the account fully dormant and unused as a way to sidestep this requirement, which seems to be what you're suggesting to people who ask, then why bother making it a requirement at all? it's not like having an extra Mastodon account with you makes it any easier to enforce the rules. the additional sign-up steps and cognitive load of maintaining the extra unused account seem like an unnecessary barrier to entry.

Graham Spookyland🎃/Polynomial

@JulianOliver @jblue gotta admit, I went from "oh cool I might contribute to that" to "oh hang on, what? that seems like busywork" pretty much instantly upon hearing the weird sign-up requirement.

J blue

@gsuberland @JulianOliver I was thinking that if I reblogged certain posts/threads to the collapsible instance, Julian would know to add it to the wiki. Not everything I post from this account (mastodon.world) is relevant to collapsible wiki.

J blue

@gsuberland @JulianOliver I think with hashtags, that puts a heavy burden on Julian to follow many different hashtags and comb through a lot of chaff.

I think PM is also not such a great idea bc there is no wider discussion. If I post something about permaculture or a specific plant in zone 8/9, I want to hear from others how well it works from someone in zone 6. I can reblog a post and Julian can see the replies from other growers.

Graham Spookyland🎃/Polynomial

@jblue @JulianOliver I guess? but why make that mandatory for everyone if it doesn't fit their workflow? like, just... let folks post stuff to the wiki if they want to contribute. make the mastodon server optional.

Julian Oliver

@gsuberland @jblue We'll give it a go as is, build both community and wiki with Masto instance as campfire, roundtable. If folk want to contrib they will sign up. That seems to be happening. It's really important that the terms/rules are clicked through, a filter as it were, as this area of research and practice is prone to attract dangerously individualist and militarist interests and cultures. But thanks for your feedback!

Graham Spookyland🎃/Polynomial

@JulianOliver @jblue *shrug*. this all seems like stuff that could be handled by a rules page on signup, and by moderating content submissions, without essentially turning it into "join my discord server but it's fedi this time".

Graham Spookyland🎃/Polynomial

@JulianOliver @jblue anyway, I'll leave you to it. I'm too ADHD for this level of faff.

J blue

@gsuberland @JulianOliver can see your frustration. For me, I will be too busy to write wikis and posting on mastodon will be there best way to accumulate knowledge and good advice about permaculture in a changing climate bc people sharing their experiences in replies that Julian can see. For instance, I can grow dwarf mangos in zone 8/9 east coast but PNW z8 cannot bc of late season cold nights, etc. I didn’t know this until I talked to a guy on here from WA.

Julian Oliver

Something folk may not know about Mastodon is that some apps allow for you to add new accounts, so you can fluidly switch between them. 'Tusky' is an example of this. That way, you don't need to move to a new server, nor change anything to your existing Masto account, when you join one. Perhaps that helps those folk writing in saying they'd like to join collapsible.systems/about, but worry they might have to move entirely.

Garth Kidd

@neauoire Collapsible’s tardigrade rule reminds me of your black and white avatar rule. I swear I once read something smart about why to do that, but regret I can’t find it.

jakintosh

@JulianOliver been thinking on the need for something like this for a while, and stoked to see you be involved in kicking this off. I’ll be joining for sure.

Julian Oliver

@jakintosh Lovely to read. I think a lot of folk would've been dreaming of the same or similar. We all feel the need, so palpable. Would be great to see you join and share your knowledge/skills/insights!

Pythia

@JulianOliver i have my own server, but I have a lot of friends who may dig this. Can I share on another platform?

ndpi

@JulianOliver I’m hopeful that this can be a useful resource and aggregator. One of the tough things about this space is not falling into the paranoia and militarism trap, so I’m heartened by the server CoC.

@JulianOliver

I like the idea of the wiki, but also don't need another Mastodon account. In the same way that I don't need another email address. The point of federation is thar we can all talk regardless of where the account is hosted.

Julian Oliver

@johntimaeus Thanks for your feedback. You can follow accounts on Collapsible.Systems and keep up to date with our progress.
