@mike

Do you have something I can reference for context before voting?

Mike Fraser :Jets: :flag:

@GGMcBG Not sure i understand? Quote posts are feature equivalent to Quote Tweets on Twitter. Basically you cite a post and comment on it.

Hot Dog Water

@mike

Twas apparently just a bad joke about "why quote posts?". ๐Ÿ˜‰

No sweat.

Mike Fraser :Jets: :flag:

@GGMcBG Sorry sometimes sarcasm is lost on me online.๐Ÿ˜Ž

Bowreality

@mike Itโ€™s also my answer not everybodyโ€™s ๐Ÿ˜‰

@mike

Which one's more controversial, Quote Posts or Full-Text Search?

Mike Fraser :Jets: :flag:

@pjohanneson I think search as I was advocating opt-out as opposed to opt-in. The poll for quote posts is still new though.

Patrick Johanneson ๐Ÿš€

@mike Yeah, I'm all for full-text search but I understand why others want it opt-in only at this point.

Mike Fraser :Jets: :flag:

@pjohanneson I've already fought this war but I honestly don't get opt in. for the feature to work it needs a critical mass of posts. Just make it easy to opt out. Otherwise what are you searching, accounts that want to promote themselves?

Patrick Johanneson ๐Ÿš€

@mike I get it, I understand where you're coming from, but I'm also a cishet white middle-class dude who has never seen the torrent of abuse some people have suffered on The Other Sites. I'm willing to let the work fall on me if I want my stuff indexed & searchable.

Mike Fraser :Jets: :flag:

@pjohanneson As I said, make it easy for vulnerable people to opt out. Like a big red button, or a banner across the interface "Your posts are currently searchable on Mastodon would you like to disable this feature?"

Patrick Johanneson ๐Ÿš€

@mike That's the kind of balancing act that makes me glad I'm not an instance admin.

Patrick Dirks ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ฆ :TheCDN2:

@mike I voted "Yes" primarily so we can all stop talking about it. Sort of like the #Elks finally winning a home game.

@mike I got used to doing without QPs. I can put my 2 cents in and still have the OP as the main focus. I like this better now

Maggieci

@mike I comment to a post, then boost the post, then boost my comment so it will show up on my TL.

It seems to keep things a little less strident here

Mike Fraser :Jets: :flag:

@MaggieCi Stop making sense Maggie , you're ruining my QP evangelism! ๐Ÿ˜…

Roy Ridin' With Biden #BLM ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ

@mike are you interested in 'yes' votes that are just so ppl can stop talking about quote-posts?

Mike Fraser :Jets: :flag:

@rpardee It's an upcoming feature being worked on by the Mastodon devs. I was wondering if people felt the same way I do about it.

Dexter

@mike I don't know that I -want- them, but they're definitely something I'll use if they're available.

I don't like the "use someone else's content to up my clout" aspect, but I do like the "let me talk about this without having to interact with the people who follow this poster".

Darnell Clayton :verified:

@mike I am for quote posts & full text search. I have Elastic Search enabled on my #Mastodon, but you are right making it opt-in is limiting. I know on #Misskey I believe most admins have it on by default, which makes search far easier.

Quote posting is already happening, itโ€™s just on Mastodon itโ€™s someone linking to a post. At least with a real quote posting feature the one being quoted will be alerted.

marqle

@darnell @mike

Are people not alerted with links? I never realised that. I've done that a few times mainly for attribution.

I might not have if I'd realised people didn't get a heads up for it.

Why do you say opt in is limiting? I can think of a few reasons, but none of them stand assaying so I must be missing something?

Darnell Clayton :verified:

@marqle @mike Opt-in is the correct call, but it does limit what is searchable on #Mastodon.

#Misskey is opt-in as well, but the culture there seems to embrace being searchable more so than Mastodon.

A classic example was when there was some drama regarding #Firefish, a search on Mastodon revealed nothing. But when I searched on Misskey I was able to obtain context for what the drama was about (even though my Misskey network is โ‰ˆ400 times smaller).

Mike Fraser :Jets: :flag:

@darnell @marqle #Misskey and #Firefish seem miles ahead with features. I run a Firefish instance and find the interface a bit busy for my liking. Almost like there's too much going on.

marqle

@mike @darnell

That's actually been my experience too. I tried the antennae too for a while but that made things even worse.

It does teach you though - when Twitter pretended it was showing you the whole picture by assorting information according to its priorities - it was doing nothing of the sort.

It's one of the most cherished myths of modern times - that social media gives us the whole picture - but it is just a myth.

No one has time to see the whole picture.

marqle

@darnell@one.darnell.one @marqle@mastodonapp.uk @mike@thecanadian.social

No I realised how
#misskey works, as you can see, but as you say it's also opt in and I can't think of any kind of instance that's opt out (though I haven't done a pleroma check yet) so I was wondering what's to be gained from changing the direction of the option?

Amandine B (She/Her)

@mike I quote posts already manually and I tag the original profile that posted the quoted thing. Sometimes I want to give context about why something matters to me.

Grant

@mike
Thatโ€™s a soft yes.

A โ€˜nice to haveโ€™ but not high on the list of critical items. It may raise the noise to signal ratio somewhat but there are smart people here so it shouldnโ€™t get carried away. ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

db

@mike Youโ€™re missing the โ€œI have quote postsโ€ option

ETA: I didnโ€™t realize Android phones donโ€™t have apps that do this yet (!!)
