(And the term #surveillance #capitalism is as short-sighted as the book that it comes from. Criticizing "surveillance capitalism" implies that there are better forms but every issue that Zuboff's book points out directly stems from capitalism itself. It's just about the big C, the "surveillance" prefix is just a veil to make things less clear.

[Additional theory: It's a very anti Google/Meta thing which is why a lot of the people pushing that term end up being very vocal Apple supporters])

@tante You do see, that you do defend toxic tech silos with this kind of rethoric? May I add, proprietory silos like Apple iOS and lesser so Google Android are indeed capitalist/conservertaive/neo-liberal/politically right-wing tech models. I get that people are lazy and do not want to take up this fight and problems that come with it. But that you give someone, like fairphone, who does take up this fight (for you also) "shit" is just plain bad.

Imho he doesn't and here is why: it is natural behaviour to avoid pain or inconvenient things in life. Unfortunately getting rid of something like the google suite is pain, costs money, time and willingness for a lot of trial and error with quirky behaviour in webdav space.
It is my job to do such things and I can do it for my family but would not recommend it for someone on their own.

OSS and in general non-corpo tools have to get more usable for jane and joe average. "Just works" is a feature and that comes with a price: ditching feature creep for feature polish. A lot of projects are not willing to do that. I am eager- and anxiously looking towards KDE Plasma 6 and wonder if it will be a pita like the transition from 3 to 4 and from 4 to 5. I am willing to deal with this shit since I use it since 1997...

@blackcoffeerider @tante I get it. And of course this will be a pita! But look, Fairphone has <100 employees, while Google has literally thousands of programers.

@cwillmes
Yes indeed but here is what bugs me a bit like
@tante :
These 100 fairphone employees should only have to worry about the technical platform and drivers. They should not be held responsible that every calendar/todo/notes/filesync app on fdroid is only functional as far as the main developers see fit who flip everyone of asking for proper support of "standard feature X defined in webdav since 2003" with "only morons need that".

@blackcoffeerider @cwillmes @tante mmm, isn't at this point a matter of how developers can actually create standardized ways to handle data and interact between their applications?
