I need some clarification on how #Mastodon/ActivityPub works.

Do I understand correctly that if I follow a person and they post in a language I haven't selected to see, it will be shown to me no matter what?

@kytta my assumption (I haven’t tested this, but we can if someone is willing) if you have, say, Italian, disabled within your settings, and someone posts in Italian AND selects Italian as the language for that post, you won’t see it.

However, if they post in Italian and leave the language set to something else, like English, you will be able to see it.

@kev that is the case for my "Local" and "Global" timelines, but not for my Home feed where I see posts from my direct subscriptions 🤔

@kytta I would assume (again 😂) that if you follow someone that trumps the language thing? 🤷‍♂️

All this language stuff only exists on Mastodon. Smithereen, for example, discards this metadata on external posts and doesn't add it to its own.

Well, this is confirmed.

This is one of the reasons why I was never against the English-only policy. Most people I follow are from #Fosstodon, and now, if they would want to write in a foreign language, I have no way to hide these posts, no matter the language.

New post editor in Tusky, the Mastodon client for Android. I am logged in from my other account on a German-speaking instance. The post is marked as being in German and contains German text saying: “Don’t pay attention to this post, I am testing stuff out…”
Back on Fosstodon, these are the settings for the languages displayed in “Public timelines”. The only language checked is English; German is definitely not checked.
In my “Home” feed on Mastodon, I still see the German post from the other account, even though it is written in a language I chose to not have being displayed to me.

@kytta debe ser muy doloroso y traumático tener que leer un post en un idioma que no sea el tuyo…

@kytta it will show cause the language selection in #Mastodon don't apply for the following feed (but for federated feed).
