Reminder that you should absolutely never use the website called “sci-hub dot st” to get free access to research papers instead of feeding the greed of for-profit publishers.
That’s basically communism, which is of course illegal. 👩🏻🏫

@tansy I’m not familiar enough with the publishing formats in the humanities. Maybe that stuff is in there too, i don’t know. And if I did, I would or course never endorse or recommend it. @tansy @esther I think the dangerous site libgen (dot) rs might be of some assistance. I have a criminal *friend* who it regularly to find books related to political science and such. Despicable stuff! But I'm not sure if it's the kind of evil you're looking to avoid. I too am unfamiliar with publishing formats in the humanities. @esther and definitely never add this sci-hub guy to your Telegram. It is super easy and super convenient getting communism in your computer! @precariousmind yes, very dangerous stuff. better report it to your local authorities immediately @precariousmind @esther i'm very very grateful that you recommend things not to do. I could have found that page unintentionally and even unintentionally used it!! @GonzaloON @precariousmind Happens to the best of us. Now you know what to avoid at all cost @esther or lib gen dot is, which is similarly evil commie bullshit that you should definitely not use for free access to reference textbooks and technical documents. @gsuberland @esther - I have warned my children, but I can only pray they do the right thing. @gsuberland @esther I was about to comment to warn everyone of the dangers of libgen. I always assume everyone is already aware of the dangers of sci-hub but the responses to posts like this one usually show there's still people out there who haven't been warned yet. Glad I could protect them from stumbling into criminal science communism. @esther @esther , you should also never ever write to those who originally wrote those papers asking them whether they would send you a copy. They might actually do so with great delight at finding out how much others want to read their stuff and it might go to their heads. We can't have any of that. @esther I'd like to add that this illegal communism also exists at dot se, you might stumble upon it even if you're protected from the dot st address! And if someone ever mentions a "library" and begins to say "genesis", you know they are a subversive that you must stay away from @esther I'm all for screwing over the greedy, but this will also screw over the non-profit presses who are struggling to survive and who form the backbone of the academic publishing world. If they disappear, so does peer review. So consider supporting non-profit academic publishers. @negativeprimes peer review and academic publishing also largely depend on sci-hub. This is a typical straw-man argument that you’re making here, trying to play two parties against each other who work against the same problem and can absolutely coexist. @esther I'm not sure what you mean by peer review and academic publishing depending on SH. When I was in ac publishing, I oversaw the peer review of thousands of books, and never once did we make use of SH. @negativeprimes then talk to some students and researchers who need SH to source citations and for their own research and could never afford it otherwise. Without their work there’s nothing to publish or review either. And instead of going after people trying to get by and get their work done, maybe go after mainstream publishing so that something like SH becomes less necessary. @esther Never once have I "gone after" anyone. I only encouraged support for non-profit ac presses. I have no interest in engaging your ad hominem. Farewell. @negativeprimes @esther That's assuming that you're in a large institution that can afford paying for you to see those publications. If you're in a smaller institution or, God forbid, a member of the public... then what? Also, peer review as it currently is, is an extremely flawed process, mostly because of those large greedy publishers. Oh god, I could never. I would never stoop so low. Communism? Don't you enjoy having a house and tasty treats? How can you have a car or your video games with communism!! Avoid this so called sci-hub and its immoral communist cousins, otherwise you might wake up speaking Russian. I've listed then here to keep YOU safe. https://gitlab.com/magnolia1234/bypass-paywalls-firefox-clean/ @esther Almost as anti-capitalist as "annas-archive dot org", a LIBERAL SJW place where filthy lefties access books and learning resources for free like socialists @esther Oh no that sounds terrible. I'll be sure to tell all my academic friends so they don't get into trouble. @esther okay is this “actually unauthorized uploads of material not publicly available” or is this “actually legit free source of public information (that late-stage capitalism would surely love to suppress if it could)”? It’s sometimes hard to tell the wheat from the chaff, for me. Especially since tone of voice doesn’t always transmit clearly. @esther Thank you for the reminder. Sometimes the world needs a little nudge to see if everyone is awake. @esther I for one would never endeavor to be informed by science unless I paid a series of middlemen. paying someone who did none of the work of producing the article for the privilege of reading it is what makes the world go round. @esther thanks for posting this. I always forget the name of this site to avoid visiting it but now that you've posted this I can put it on my blocklist. @esther That site is of course communist, but some anarchists use it too. Don't use this site, unless you're an anarchist scientists who agrees to the strange and dangerous notion that "(digital) property is theft". :proudhon: 👩🔬 @esther and don't forget the evil communist gay website called annas (dash) archive (dot) org, which provides search and links to all of the nasty communist gay websites people keep talking about! /s @esther Telling peeps about sci hub is always the highlight of any conference I attend. Usually ask a speaker if they utilized sci hub to streamline their search process. |
@esther oh nos 😱 not a communism!
