@timelordiroh @gamingonlinux every year is year of Linux!!! :BlobhajTinyHeart:

(At least for me🥳)

Janne Moren

@timelordiroh @gamingonlinux
The real Year of Linux is the friends we made along the way!

Michael Labowicz

@gamingonlinux exciting news, but I wonder if apple's transition to arm helped with this trend

Der Motzmichel :mastodon:

@mlabowicz @gamingonlinux As long as you need a Mac Studio for gaming it surely is not ... 😂😎

Pascal Leinert 📯

@Motzmichel @gamingonlinux Depends on the support. If a game supports Apple Silicon / Metal and/or MoltenVK it works just fine. But that’s just a small percentage of games.

Der Motzmichel :mastodon:

@pasci_lei @gamingonlinux A Standard Mac Mini with m2 processor is still not capable of proper gaming accept Emulation ...

DrYak

@pasci_lei there's supposed to be the Apple's "Game Porting Toolkit" for the remainder (Wine + Apple's own D3Dmetal wrapper, similar to Valve's proton).

But apparently the very polished SteamOS and SteamDeck experience managed to beat Apple.

Linuxånder🐧

@Seyker
If so there is the Holo ISO for now, also you can just use the Steam Big Picture on any PC with any Distro.
@gamingonlinux

Liam @ GamingOnLinux 🐧🎮

@Lamdarer @Seyker no one should be using HoloISO or any tiny distro like it, it's just asking for problems

T5F TiZ

What do you think of ChimeraOS, Liam? I get the impression that it’s a much more fleshed out and complete version of this concept, better suited for a wider variety of PCs.

Seyker - Quim

@Lamdarer @gamingonlinux For now I'm waiting for a full release, I want something as comfortable and user-friendly as SteamOs, and getting some more native apps would be nice too

Robert Tuck

@gamingonlinux Now if only they could fix steamwebhelper so that it doesn't chew 100% cpu in the background and prevent Steam from opening random windows ***WHILE I'M IN THE MIDDLE OF A FREAKIN' GAME***.

That would be a real achievement

Baessando :Ryyca:☭🇧🇷🇺🇳🇵🇸

@MatryoshkaLimit @gamingonlinux mine is not that horrible. But sometimes eats too too much ram. For the goddess!

DrYak

@gamingonlinux Even more impressive: this is happening *all the while* Apple has been pushing for "Game Porting Toolkit". (their own Wine-based framework with their own D3Dmetal translation layer; Proton-/Crossover-like).

Speaks great about the level of polishing that Valve has done on the SteamOS experience.

Mac Justice

@dryak @gamingonlinux the game porting toolkit was introduced as part of a beta OS release a few months ago, and hasn’t really been “pushed” for consumer use. Not to take away from the success of the Steam Deck, but Apple’s sticking to their historical trend of barely acknowledging gaming

P1zzaCat

@gamingonlinux I've gotten almost all my friends to get steam decks. Between the bragging I can game in my bed and actually seeing it in action everyone I know thinks about getting one now.

Sylver W. Poulsen

@P1zzaCat @gamingonlinux I took mine with me to work, to game during break, and 3 people ordered them the same day 😝.

Edson "Eddie" C da Silva

@gamingonlinux Sometimes I find myself thinking how much bigger the number of users on Linux would be if people actively participated in hardware survey. It doesn't enter my head that there are more active "Steam Decks" than Linux desktops with Steam installed.

ZeroHora

@eddiecsilva @gamingonlinux Reading this and remembering that I skip the survey yesterday 😅

DELETED

@eddiecsilva @gamingonlinux
Everyone please do not take these numbers seriously. Valve owns the website, the data is from Valve, it’s only Valve collecting your data.

This is the same thing as Elon making up numbers because it’s only coming from Elon’s website. STOP THE Lies.

And @gamingonlinux you need to report the source of the data, the source is only in Valve corp, only Valve. We can not confirm anything else but Valve claims such numbers exist.

Edson "Eddie" C da Silva

@firecat @gamingonlinux I think you can take it easy, nobody is putting Valve on a pedestal. It's the data we have, and you can't trust it 100% nor can you refute it 100%. My point is that if Linux desktop users agreed to participate in some kind of census, I believe we would have much better numbers to show. 🖖

Liam @ GamingOnLinux 🐧🎮

@firecat @eddiecsilva

1) calm down and don’t reply to me like that or get blocked
2) well DUH, it’s obvious the data is from Valve the article is specifically talking about Steam dummy

DELETED

@gamingonlinux The clickbait article you copy isn't helping with your case nor did you say anything about data it collected. Let me reminder that i also had to do this too when Steam Deck sale went up with again only Valve being the only source.

Don't be like those newspapers that just copy cats their way and links to the source that links to one company.

Liam @ GamingOnLinux 🐧🎮

@firecat I didn’t copy anything, you’re really not making any sense, so I’m just going to mute you because your attitude stinks

T5F TiZ

What kind of silly post is this? Don’t you know how the hardware survey works? They ask you if you want to do it, and then if you say yes, they collect some basic data about your system specs, and then you’re done. That’s what the source of this data is: people opting in to the hardware survey.

And then you’re comparing data conveyed by users who opted into the hardware survey to… Elon making up numbers??? What is your agenda here? What sort of conspiracy do you think you’re trying to uncover?

Gavin

@firecat @eddiecsilva @gamingonlinux It is just data from the Steam hardware survey...not a major conspiracy. store.steampowered.com/hwsurve

DELETED

@gavin57 @eddiecsilva again the main problem is the one who owns the data. They removed all possible ways to collect data as an individual. This is not any different than Elons way.

Gavin

@firecat @eddiecsilva This thankfully has nothing to do with Space Karen. This is about Valve surveying users and making the information available to everyone. Nothing more.

DELETED

@gavin57 @eddiecsilva it’s not available for everyone, you can not access the website, you can not request it, the data is exclusive to Valve. You don’t own the data, you can’t track down the data. There is only Valve has the main source.

Gavin

@firecat @eddiecsilva I'm literally accessing the website.

The thing is, Valve is not obliged to provide anything. They're not a government organization whose sole purpose is to collect and present statistical data as part of its civic remit...they're a game developer and software distribution platform that offers this data to interested users.

Screenshot of the Steam Hardware & Software Survey - July 2023
Gavin

@firecat @eddiecsilva What is really interesting is that 42% of Steam users on Linux are using SteamOS Holo. Arch and Ubuntu are the 2nd & 3rd largest with 7%.

DELETED

@gavin57 @eddiecsilva Just believing that alone is no different than Elon Musk fake followers. They control the website, they control the data, they control who sents it. I often see pot of people not getting the survey. The data is just isn't trustable enough.

Gavin

@firecat @eddiecsilva …but the data is inconsequential. Right now we’re talking about what machines & software is used to play games on. It really doesn’t matter.

If Valve was in charge of civic planning, fine, but they’re not.

Musk is also irrelevant. A two-bit car dealer who runs a toxic website that is dropping in value by the day.

DELETED

@gavin57 @eddiecsilva it makes people believe Valve is successful in Linux. Also, over at knob I just realized that Valve never mentioned what “Linux” means in their chart. It can be anything from VM, bot accounts, false proxy, etc. The data should not be considered 100% PC Linux.

Gavin replied to DELETED

@firecat @eddiecsilva You have to drill down, but the data is all there.

Valve Software's Steam hardware survey results for July - Linux distributions
DELETED replied to Gavin

@gavin57 @eddiecsilva “other”, yep see what I mean. Not always 100% PC Linux and Valve won’t share any information on it.

Ponder Stibbons 🇧🇷🇩🇪

@firecat
The difference is that elon has an incentive to lie an can easily be proven wrong...
The data that valve gets from us is purpose bound and sold to game devs at best but afaik not to third parties. If you have different numbers feel free to call out Valve but otherwise you are connecting dots that are not even on the same paper and right on the edge of false accusations....
@eddiecsilva @gamingonlinux

DELETED

@blackcoffeerider @eddiecsilva @gamingonlinux Valve has lied, we have lawsuits filed proving Valve lied. Do not shame away from the truth, the lawyers are fighting Valve and they are on the side of the government, not corporate interests. Valve owns the data, they own the software, they own the website and they own the employees who works for them. You have nothing but baseless accusations from the community or newspaper.

Motasem

@gamingonlinux Woah thats very cool, as a linux user i am super happy :D hopefully better compatability comes into the future

CommodoreSpence

@gamingonlinux I do love my steamdeck, although in fairness it probably counts most of my game time on my Mac as PC since I use GFN but....i am in fact on a Mac heh

davibu

@gamingonlinux
It might also be related to it being summer more people being outside and on the go.
There are less people gaming on a Desktop PC in Summer. I think Linux bigger market share in the Steam Survey often correlated with summer.( As well as certain events like the release of proton or the steam deck).

RF

@gamingonlinux
It seems that all of the big AAA title releases I've been interested in lately have been available on linux (steam/proton) day one. I'd say the Steam Deck had the desired effect of making devs pay attention to linux, and I'm here for it. I finally deleted my windows partition last year and have not missed it at all.

Benjamin

@gamingonlinux Gotta look forward to the new excuses for not supporting Linux by game devs. They always supported MacOS. And claimed Linux share was too low. Now they support MacOS and Linux has a higher share.

Bullshit coming through in 3...2...1...

Bob Machintruc

@gamingonlinux After having overtaken macOS in July, Linux is still above macOS on Steam in August :blobcatheart: gamingonlinux.com/steam-tracke
