BBC Research & Development

Hi! πŸ‘‹ Here's our #introduction.

We're BBC Research & Development; we explore and test new technology to discover how the BBC can best make use of it in the future.

For 100 years our engineers have been at the forefront of developments in broadcasting.

We're now researching how everyone could get TV & radio via the internet – along with all the flexibility and creativity that brings.

5G, AI, next-gen audio, UHD, personal data… we are investigating all these – and more!

We do all of this to bring audiences new, immersive and accessible experiences.

We also look at how technology can help the production process. We prototype and test new tools, create datasets, open-source our work, work with partners in the industry and publish our research so that everyone can benefit.

Find out more about all this on our website bbc.co.uk/rd

We’re now exploring Mastodon, so please follow us - we’ll update you with what we are working on in our labs.

@BBCRD Maybe you could do something about your institutional transphobia while you’re at it. Many of us have long memories.

@BBCRD Awesome! So I recognize I'm just yelling into the abyss right now, but what the people want is a 24 hour live feed of life from the perspective of a random stray cat. Multiple stray cats. You can call it BBC-C1, C2, etc. All the political bullshit, honestly everyone is tired of it. Give us some premium cat content.

@BBCRD

Please verify your account. It is easy and costs nothing.

@BBCRD Croeso!
I hope your radio programmes will have a presence on the fediverse @social.bbc soon?

Cool - can I suggest trying other apps - there are a lot of quality of life improvements out there - seach, quoting, filters, friendlier UI, etc

@BBCRD You're pretty new here, so a bit of advice:

Post cats. A lot. This is the Internet.

And gay stuff. That also helps.

@BBCRD Are you investigating how to be less transphobic too or is that out of scope?

@BBCRD oh hi! Looks like our paths overlap a fair bit! (I interacted with members of your team when I worked at Inrupt)

Tim Cowlishaw

@BBCRD oh wow, this an exciting development! 🀩

Rachel Lawson

@BBCRD awesome to see the BBC embracing open systems like Mastodon. Maybe you could also look to embrace open systems for internet radio again? #hint #hint

@BBCRD@social.bbc tbh I will not be following any BBC account apart from potential local news ones

I do not trust the BBC as it is with their close ties to the government, even going as far as articles from The Guardian about purposely rewording stuff relating to the start of COVID restrictions in 2020

I didn't really save the article, but I can at least point out this article that The Guardian also made about BBC censorship during the coronation:

@BBCRD Welcome to the Fediverse Aunty Beeb. I hope to see a lot more of you around here. πŸ‘‹

Ruth Mottram

@BBCRD πŸ‘‹ Welcome.

I've already found something cool that I'd like to use from your colleagues @Connected_Studio - thanks for joining us!

Dio9sys

@BBCRD I hope you understand the sheer positive social impact you had with the stoner population when you released Planet Earth 2 in 4K

@BBCRD hi watching tv via internet is a no brainer *but i'm still very happy with my plain tv and no streaming services*. What i'm really looking forward too is getting all of the bbc news departments here so that news organisation in other countries *like my own* can see that this is alo a good place to be. But welcome, hope you will stick around. Have fun.

@BBCRD, welcome to the fediverse. It's about time. I have this vision of wonderful folk who believe in the BBC doing good for the people of the UK and beyond.
